Robbery Investigation, Wincott Drive and Eglinton Avenue West, Man arrested

The Toronto Police Service Hold Up Squad would like to make the public aware of an arrest made in relation to two violent bank robberies and a retail store robbery.

It is alleged that:

- on Friday, February 15, 2019, at 8:25 a.m., a man entered a bank branch near Wincott Drive and Eglinton Avenue West

- the man pointed a handgun at several people, while demanding money from the customer service representative

- he threw a bag at the teller demanding that it be filled up, and then fled with a quantity of cash

It is further alleged that:

- approximately 30 minutes later, on Friday, February 15, 2019, at 9 a.m., the same man entered a bank branch near St. Clair Avenue West and Jane Street

- he pointed a handgun at a bank employee and demanded that cash be put into the bag that he had brought with him

- as the employee moved away from the counter the man jumped over the counter

- he grabbed another employee around the neck, placed the gun against her head, making further demands for money

- the victim complied with the man's demands and he obtained a quantity of cash

Officers from 11 Division had been called to the robbery while it was in progress. They apprehended the man outside the branch, while he was attempting to flee with the money.

Upon further investigation by members of the Hold Up Squad it was determined that this man was also believed to be responsible for a retail robbery.

It is further alleged that:

- on Monday, February 11, 2019, at 9:44 a.m., the same man was wearing a mask and armed with a handgun when he entered a convenience store located near Weston Road and Church Street

- he made a verbal demand for cash, lottery tickets and cigarettes and ordered the store employee to place the items inside a gym bag he had brought with him

On Friday, February 15, 2019, Bevon McDermott, 57, of Toronto, was arrested.

He has been charged with:

1. Three counts of Robbery with a Firearm
2. Three counts of Use Firearm to Commit Indictable Offence
3. Four counts of Point Firearm
4. Unauthorized Use of a Firearm
5. Possession of a Firearm know its Possession is Unauthorized

He appeared in court on Saturday, February 16, 2019, at 10 a.m., at Old City Hall Court, room 101.

Media advisory, Wednesday, February 20, 2019, 8:30 a.m., Woodbine Banquet Hall, 30 Vice Regent Boulevard, 2019 Anti Human Trafficking: Ending Violence Against Indigenous Women and Girls Conference, Opening Ceremonies

On Wednesday, February 20, 2019, at 8:30 a.m., at the Woodbine Banquet Hall, located at 30 Vice Regent Boulevard, the Toronto Police Service's Aboriginal Peacekeeping Unit, of the Community Partnerships & Engagement Unit, will open the Anti-Human Trafficking: Ending Violence against Indigenous Women and Girls conference.

The two-day event, the first of its kind, will feature speakers and survivors who will share their experience and expertise in identifying and addressing the underlying root causes that have led to the vulnerability of women and girls within Indigenous communities. The goal of the conference is to educate and create awareness among frontline police officers and investigators who are often the first point of contact with victims and survivors.

Opening ceremonies are open to the media and will include remarks by Chief Mark Saunders; Andy Pringle, Chair of the Toronto Police Services Board; Andre Morriseau, Ontario Native Women's Association; and A/Superintendent David Rydzik, Unit Commander of the Community Partnerships & Engagement Unit. The ceremony will also feature traditional prayers and drumming.

2019 Special Olympics Ontario, Invitational Youth Games, Mascots Unveiling

On Wednesday, February 20, 2019, Chief Mark Saunders will officially unveil the 2019 Special Olympics Ontario Invitational Youth Games mascots.

The Toronto Police Service is tremendously honoured to have been named the host agency for the #YouthGames2019. In addition to hosting the games, Chief Mark Saunders has also been named the “Honorary Chair” for the games.

The games will be the first of its kind and will be part of the year-long 50th anniversary worldwide celebration of Special Olympics (July 2018 – June 2019).

Over two thousand participants from around the world will partake in the games May 14-17, 2019, comprising of student athletes between 13–21 years of age with and without intellectual disabilities, accompanied by their coaches.

The unveiling will take place at The Hanger - 75 Carl Hall Road, at 11 a.m., and will coincide with the School Championships Bocce Qualifier – Toronto West, where student athletes from Toronto West and the GTA will compete to qualify to attend the upcoming Youth Games in May.

It is expected that there will be approximately 100 student athletes in attendance.

Gavrav Banga, 28, was last seen on Sunday, February 17, 2019, at 5:30 a.m., in the Highway 27 and Finch Avenue West area.

He is described as 5'6", 180 lbs., with black hair and a full beard.

Robbery investigation, Birchmount Road and Ellesmere Road area, Man arrested

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of an arrest made in an investigation into numerous robberies that occurred at or near various bank automated teller machines.

It is alleged that:

- from Friday, February 1, 2019, to Monday, February 18, 2019, numerous robberies occurred near banks or small businesses in the east end of Toronto, in 41 Division, 42 Division, 43 Division and 33 Division areas

- a man primarily targeted women using the banks automated teller machine

- he was armed with a knife during the robberies

It is further alleged that:

- fast food businesses were also the targets of the robberies


On Monday, February 18, 2019, in the early evening hours, the man was arrested in the Birchmount Road and Ellesmere Road area, without incident.

Shah Safiyyullah Hussaini Syed, 20, of Toronto, was charged with:

1. Three counts of Robbery with a Firearm
2. Five counts of Disguise with Intent
3. Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000
4. Theft of Motor Vehicle
5. Possession of Motor Vehicle Over
6. Theft of a Credit Card
7. Three counts of Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000
8. Fraud Under $5000
9. Two counts of Weapons Dangerous
10. Four counts of Robbery with a Weapon
11. Threatening Death
12. Possession of a Weapon
13. Two counts of Uttering Death Threats
14. Forcible Confinement
15. Possess Weapon, for Committing an Offence
16. Uttering Threats
17. Two counts of Robbery with an Offensive Weapon
18. Two counts of Assault with a Weapon
19. Two counts of Possess Weapon Dangerous to Public Peace

He was scheduled to appear in court at 1911 Eglinton Avenue East, on Tuesday February 19, 2019.

Double Shooting Investigation, 50 Lotherton Pathway, Suspect wanted

The Toronto Police Service is seeking the public's assistance with a double shooting investigation.

On Tuesday, February 19, 2019, at 9:09 a.m., police received a call for a shooting at 50 Lotherton Pathway.

It is reported:

- officers arrived on scene and located a 24-year-old man and a 47-year-old woman suffering from gunshot wounds

- they both were immediately rushed to hospital via emergency run

- the woman has sustained life-altering injuries, and the man's injuries are considered to be non-life-threatening

Investigators believe this is a targeted shooting and are releasing security camera images of the suspect.

Ali Kiamarz-Milani, 36, was last seen on Wednesday, February 20, 2019, at 9:55 a.m., in the area of Queen Street West and Ossington Avenue.

He is clean shaven, with prominent brown eyes.

He was last seen wearing a knitted black hat, a navy blue coat, cream-coloured pants, and black and white shoes.

Homicide #52/2018 and Homicide #6/2019, Update, Man arrested, Ibrahim Khiar, 33

The Toronto Police Service would like to thank the public for their assistance with an arrest made in two homicide investigations.

On Sunday, July 1, 2018, at 10:28 p.m., officers responded to a call for a shooting in the Kensington Market area.

Officers attended and found four people with gunshot wounds and varying degrees of injury. One man was taken to hospital via emergency run.

On Wednesday, July 4, 2018, Marcel Teme, 19, of Toronto, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.

On Friday, February 8, 2019, at 1:54 a.m., officers responded to a call for a shooting at 366 Queen Street East.

On Wednesday, February 20, 2019, at approximately 1:30 p.m., Ibrahim Khiar, 33, of Toronto, was arrested and charged with:

For Homicide #52/2018:

1. Second Degree Murder
2. Three counts of Discharge Firearm Endanger Life

For Homicide #6/2019:

1. First Degree Murder

In addition, the accused was allegedly in possession of a firearm at the time of the arrest. He is further charged with:

1. Careless Storage of a Firearm
2. Careless Storage of Ammunition
3. Possession of a Loaded Prohibited Firearm
4. Possession of a Firearm Knowing Its Possession is Unauthorized
5. Occupy Motor Vehicle with Loaded Firearm
6. Possess Prohibited Device Knowing No Authority
7. Possess Firearm with Altered Serial Number
8. Carry Concealed Weapon
9. Possession of a Firearm While Prohibited

He is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, February 21, 2019, at Old City Hall, room 101, at 10 a.m.

#Fraudchat: Door-to-Door Scams, Thursday, February 21, 2019, at 1 p.m.

On Thursday, February 21, 2019, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m, the Toronto Police Service Financial Crimes Unit will be joined by members of the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre to answer questions regarding Door-to-Door Scams. Members of the public can follow the Financial Crimes Unit, Detective Regan, Detective Constable Kelly and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, using the hashtags @ReganFCU @DKellyFCU @TPSFCU and @canantifraud on Twitter.

To follow #Fraudchat, members of the public simply need to log on to Twitter from 1 p.m., to 2 p.m. EST, and follow the hashtag. An application such as "Tweetdeck", which allows users to separately view tweets containing this hashtag, is also helpful in following the chat.

Public Safety Alert, Stolen medication, Bloor Street West and Mill Road area

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of a quantity of stolen narcotics from a veterinary clinic.

The drugs were stolen during a break-and-enter incident that occurred during the overnight hours between Monday, February 18, 2019, and Tuesday February 19, 2019, in the Bloor Street West and Mill Road area.

The narcotics stolen include, but are not limited to the following drugs:

- Morphine,
- Codeine,
- Tramadol,
- Gabapentin,
- Phenobarbital,
- Narcan,
- Meperidine,
- Midazolam,
- Diazepam,
- Vetergesic,
- Torbugesic,
- Atropine,
- Alfaxan,
- Propofol,
- Tramadol

The drugs could be harmful/fatal if ingested, especially to children.

Public Safety Alert, Gerrard Street East and Howland Road area, Indecent act

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of indecent acts committed in the Gerrard Street East and Howland Road area.

It is reported that:

- on Tuesday, February 19, 2019, at 4:25 p.m., a woman was walking westbound on Gerrard Street East

- a man then called out to her from his car asking for directions

- she approached the parked car and observed that the man was not wearing pants or underwear and was committing an indecent act

- she immediately fled the scene

The man is described as white, approximately 30-years-old, with a heavy build, dark short spiked hair, and a goatee.

The car is described as a green older model vehicle.

Fail to Remain Person Injury Collision, 1440 Lawrence Avenue West, Security camera images of vehicle of interest released

On Friday, February 8, 2019, at 9:45 p.m., police responded to a call for a Fail to Remain Personal Injury Collision at 1440 Lawrence Avenue West.

It is reported that:

- a 55-year-old male pedestrian was crossing the driveway of 1440 Lawrence Avenue West, from the north to the south side

- a white van, which was travelling southbound on the driveway, struck the pedestrian

- the driver and passenger of the white van stopped and exited the vehicle, and had a brief conversation with the victim while he laid on the ground

- the driver and the passenger then got back into the vehicle and fled the scene

- the pedestrian was transported to hospital with serious injuries

Officers responded and the investigation has revealed that:

- the collision occurred late in the evening and video evidence shows that there were other people, who may be residents of the building, were in the parking lot at the time of the incident

- investigators believe that others may have seen the collision and observed or know the suspect vehicle

- the driver and/or occupants of the suspect vehicle may be residents of the building or know someone who lives there


Traffic Services investigators are seeking assistance from the public in locating the vehicle and identifying the driver.
