Theft investigation, McCaul Street and Queen Street West area, Woman wanted

The Toronto Police Service is seeking the public's assistance identifying a woman involved in a theft investigation.

It is reported that:

- on Sunday, November 18, 2018, a man attended a gym in the McCaul Street and Queen Street West area

- his gym bag, containing a laptop, cell phone and a wallet, were stolen from the men’s locker room

An investigation by 52 Division revealed that a man and a woman were involved.

Police have no descriptors of the man however the woman is described as 25-35, approximately 5’6”, with black/dark brown hair. She was wearing a black jacket and black tights with a Nike logo on the left ankle.

Security camera images are released.

Homicide #9/2019, Park Lawn Road and Lake Shore Boulevard West, Veronika Mrhova, 24

On Sunday, February 10, 2019, at 6:50 a.m., police responded to calls for the sound of gunshots in the Park Lawn Road and Lake Shore Boulevard West area.

Officers arrived on scene and located a woman in a white Mercedes-Benz. She had apparent gunshot wounds and was without vital signs. She was transported to hospital.

It was reported that two people were last seen fleeing in a dark-coloured SUV, east on Lake Shore Boulevard West.


On Friday, February 15, 2019, the woman succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased in hospital.

She has been identified as Veronika Mrhova, 24, of Toronto.

Homicide #8/2019, 21 Bergamot Avenue, Tesfa Welsh-Hope, 28

On Wednesday, February 13, 2019, at 10:50 p.m., police responded to a call for a shooting at 21 Bergamot Avenue.

Officers arrived on scene and located a man suffering from gunshot wounds, lying on the ground outside of the building. He was rushed to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.

He has been identified as Tesfa Welsh-Hope, 28, of Toronto.

The suspect in this investigation has been described as a male, wearing a dark-coloured, hooded jacket. He was last seen fleeing the area, running southbound along a pathway toward 11 Bergamot Avenue.

Family Day On-Street Parking Enforcement

The Toronto Police Service Parking Enforcement Unit will not be enforcing the following on-street parking bylaws during the Family Day public holiday on Monday, February 18, 2019:

- Pay-and-Display/Metered Areas
- Rush-Hour Routes
- Posted signs indicating Monday to Friday regulations

All other areas and parking offences will continue to be enforced.

Missing man, Sheppard Avenue East and Leslie Street, Waseem Almakeari, 26

The Toronto Police Service is requesting the public’s assistance locating a missing man.

Waseem Almakeari, 26, was last seen on Thursday, February 14, 2019, at 6 p.m., in the Sheppard Avenue East and Leslie Street area.

He is described as 5'7", 119 lbs., with a thin build, light complexion, with long curly hair and is clean shaven. He was last seen wearing a blue plaid shirt and blue jeans.

Police are concerned for his safety.

The Toronto Police Service requests the public’s assistance locating a missing man.

Nolon Lahood, 27, was last seen on Friday, February 15, 2019, at 10 p.m., in the Spadina Avenue and College Street area.

He is described as 6’4”, approximately 150 lbs., with a thin build, and black shaved hair. He was last seen wearing a long beige jacket, light beige joggers, a dark beige T-shirt, and grey New Balance shoes. He was carrying a light grey backpack.

Police are concerned for his safety.

Public Safety Alert, Lost/Stolen Medication, Davenport Road and Yonge Street

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of a quantity of lost/stolen medication.

It is reported that:

- on Thursday, February 14, 2019, at approximately 4 p.m., 30 vials of 10 mg each, totalling 300 mg of Fentanyl, was lost or stolen from a clinic in the Davenport Road and Yonge Street area.

The medication could be harmful/fatal if ingested, especially to children.

Shooting investigation, Danforth Avenue and Carlaw Avenue, Man arrested

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of an arrest made in a shooting investigation.

On Sunday, February 17, 2019, at approximately 2:27 a.m., police responded to a call for the Sound of Gunshots in the area of Danforth Avenue and Carlaw Avenue.

It is alleged that:

- two men became involved in a physical altercation inside a sports bar

- the fight continued outside of the address, onto Danforth Avenue

- one of the men involved pulled out a handgun and fired several shots into the bar before fleeing the area

Through investigation, the man was arrested a short time later. He has been identified as Joshua Maier-McKenzie, 25, of Toronto.

It is further alleged that:

- Maier-McKenzie is the person wanted in an Attempt Murder investigation involving a firearm

- the incident occurred on Wednesday, February 13, 2019, in the area of Sherbourne Street and Dundas Street East.

It is further alleged that:

- Maier-McKenzie was also wanted in relation to a Domestic Assault investigation, which occurred on Thursday, January 31, 2019.

He has been charged with:

1) Attempt Murder
2) Two counts of Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
3) Two counts of Point Firearm
4) Careless Use of Firearm
5) Possess Loaded Firearm
6) Two counts of Possess Firearm or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order
7) Possession Firearm Knowing Possession Unauthorized
8) Two counts of Discharge Firearm with Intent to Wound
9) Discharge Firearm being Reckless as to the Life or Safety of Another Person
10) Possession Prohibited Weapon
11) Two counts of Uttering Threats
12 Assault
13) Mischief to Property

He was scheduled to appear in court on Sunday, January 17, 2019, at Old City Hall, at 9 a.m.

Media Advisory, Monday, February 18, 2019, at 10:30 a.m., Toronto Police Headquarters, Media Gallery, Police announce results of Project Moses

On Monday, February 18, 2019, at 10:30 a.m., at Toronto Police Headquarters, in the Media Gallery, Deputy Chief of Police James Ramer and Inspector Steve Watts of the Drug Squad will brief the media on Project Moses, a joint investigation with the Ottawa Police Service.

Arrests and charges will be announced plus a display of items seized.

The news conference will be available on the TOC and live-streamed.


Please note that, for the safety of employees and visitors, all persons entering Toronto Police Service headquarters must go through security screening. You are not required to submit to screening. You may leave at any time but, if you do not consent to this screening, you will be denied entry. Thank you for your cooperation.

Missing Person Unit Appeal For Information, Mssing man, John Leonard, then 49, Last seen over 25 years ago

The Missing Person Unit (MPU) is highlighting the case of John Leonard, 49,

He was last seen on Friday, May 8, 1992, at approximately 12:30 p.m. when he borrowed a friend’s vehicle. The vehicle was later that same evening located in the parking lot of Woodbine Racetrack, in Toronto. He has not been seen or heard from since.

He is described as 5'10", 170 lbs., thin build. with blond hair, and blue eyes.

His photo from 1992 has been re-released.

The MPU ensures the investigative response of Missing Persons and Unidentified Human Remains investigations including historic unsolved cases.

Leonard's case is also featured on Canada's Missing website, which is the website for the National Centre for Missing Persons and Unidentified Remains.

Break-and-Enter investigations, Two men arrested and charged

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of arrests made in an ongoing investigation into numerous nighttime commercial break-and-enters.

It is alleged that:

- between Saturday, January 5, 2019 and Thursday, February 14, 2019, between the hours of 1 a.m. and 6 a.m., several dozen commercial break-and-enters occurred in the east end of Toronto, primarily in the 42 Division area (North Scarborough),

- the suspect(s) would target restaurants and businesses in commercial areas and plazas

- they would break the front glass door or window and enter the premises

- cash registers, cash and other valuables were stolen

- in many of these occurrences, the suspect(s) would leave in a vehicle

On Thursday, February 14, 2019, in the early morning hours, two men were arrested after committing a commercial break-and-enter in the Yonge Street and Steeles Avenue area of York Region.

Michael Haughton, 46, of Toronto, was charged with:

1. Fourteen counts of Break and Enter – Toronto Police Service
2. Four counts of Break and Enter – York Regional Police Service
3. Possession of Property Obtained by Crime
4. Possession of Proceeds Obtained by Crime
5. Possession of Break and Enter Tools
6. Dangerous Driving
7. Fail to Stop for Police
8. Four counts of Fail to Comply Probation

Sebastian Borgh, 56, of Toronto, was charged with:

1. Drive while Suspended
2. Break and Enter and Commit
3. Possession of Property Obtained by Crime

Both men were scheduled to appear in court, at 1911 Eglinton Avenue East, on Friday February 15, 2019.

As a result of further investigation, police now believe there may be other victims and the investigation is continuing.

Aggravated Assault Investigation, Queen Street West and Macdonell Avenue, Man wanted

The Toronto Police Service is requesting the public’s assistance identifying a man wanted in an Aggravated Assault investigation.

It is reported that:

- on Thursday, February 14, 2019, at 8:50 p.m., a man became involved in a verbal altercation with an unknown man in the Queen Street and Macdonell Avenue area

- it quickly escalated, as the unknown man began assaulting the man, punching and kicking him, and stabbing him with a knife

-the suspect then fled on foot

He is described as in his 40s, 6'0", with a thin build. He was wearing a green knee-length trench coat, dark pants, a black hooded sweatshirt, a black baseball cap and glasses.

Public Safety Alert, Vehicle Warm Up Thefts, Downtown Core

The Toronto Police Service is warning members of the public that the arrival of extreme cold temperatures, and vehicles left unattended and warming up in driveways, has resulted in an increase number of vehicle thefts reported in and around the downtown core.

Reported cases have occurred in the area bounded by Dundas Street to the north, Lake Shore Boulevard to the south, Sherbourne Street to the east, and Bond Street to the west.

The convenience of a warm vehicle is not worth the risk of having it stolen. Police are strongly advising members of the public not to leave their vehicles unattended and running at any time.

Homicide #6/2019, 366 Queen Street East, Jaunoi Christian, 24, Photo released

On Friday, February 8, 2019, at 1:54 a.m., officers responded to a call for a shooting at 366 Queen Street East.

Officer arrived on scene to find a man suffering from gunshot wounds. He succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene.

He has been identified as Jaunoi Christian, 24, of Brampton.

Project Moses, Nicholas Ortega, 42, arrested, Vincent Yun-Hao Huang, 34, and Daniel Kam-Wah Siu, 33, wanted

On Monday, February 18, 2019, Deputy Chief of Police James Ramer and Inspector Steve Watts of the Drug Squad held a news conference on Project Moses, a joint investigation with the Ottawa Police Service. The conference can be viewed on YouTube by clicking here.

In October 2018 members of the Toronto Drug Squad began an investigation into a high-level drug dealer.

It is alleged that:

- the drug operation ranged from the Greater Toronto Area to Ottawa

- the operation involved an intricate drug trafficking network, trap furniture and vehicles with professionally-installed trap compartments and an Airbnb property

Officers conducted an extensive investigation and on Friday, February 15, 2019 and Saturday, February 16, 2019, numerous Criminal Code and Controlled Drugs and Substances Act search warrants were executed by the Drug Squad and the Emergency Task Force.

This investigation was done in collaboration with the Ottawa Police Service Drug Unit and FINTRAC.

On Friday, February 15, 2019, Nicholas Ortega, 42, of Ottawa, was arrested and charged with:

1. Six counts of Careless Use of a Firearm
2. Six counts of Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
3. Six counts of Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
4. Six counts of Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Firearm with Ammunition
5. Two counts of Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Serial Number Has Been Tampered with
6. Two counts of Possession of a Prohibited Device
7. Possess Firearm Contrary to a Prohibition Order
8. Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking in Heroin
9. Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking in Cocaine
10. Possession for the Purpose of Sell Cannabis

Canada Wide Warrants will be issued for Vincent Yun-Hao Huang, 34, and Daniel Kam-Wah Siu, 33, both of Toronto. They are wanted for numerous firearms and drug charges.

It is further alleged that during the search warrants of three homes, two storage lockers and two vehicles, numerous items were seized by police, including:

- a black SKS assault rifle
- a Smith and Wesson M&P9 9 mm pistol
- a Glock 9x19 9mm pistol with over-capacity magazine and silencer
- a CZ 40 .40 pistol
- a Sturm Ruger and Co pistol
- a Smith and Wesson .40 cal pistol
- a Taurus 9mm pistol
- 1016 rounds of various ammunition (9mm, .40, .45, .223, .22)
- 2.5 kilograms of powder cocaine
- 1 kilogram of fentanyl
- 500 grams of heroin
- 2 kilograms of marihuana
- $60,000 in proceeds of crime
- drug packaging paraphernalia
- scales, a vacuum sealer, and money counters

Missing woman, Queen Street and Ossington Avenue, Ayisha Harvey, 28

The Toronto Police Service is requesting the public’s assistance locating a missing woman.

Ayisha Harvey, 28, was last seen on Sunday, February 17, 2019, in the Queen Street West and Ossington Avenue area.

She is described as 5'5", 140 lbs., with shoulder-length auburn hair. She was last seen wearing a green parka, a grey shirt, black leggings and a blue scarf.

Police are concerned for her safety.
