On Tuesday, January 1, 2019, Ontario's penalties for distracted driving significantly increased upon conviction. Click HERE for full penalties.
Starting on Monday, January 14, 2019, the Toronto Police Service will begin an aggressive zero tolerance enforcement and awareness campaign focused on drivers operating a motor vehicle while using a hand-held communication or entertainment device (cell phone).
We know that road safety and distracted driving is not something that enforcement alone can solve. Distracted Driving is a behaviour issue and can only improve when we collectively make changes to how we drive.
To drivers who think that they can hide their use of a hand-held device by simply holding it down or out of plain sight from police, we have a message. Toronto Police Officers will be utilizing all types of vehicles and tactics during this campaign to look for distracted drivers.
Officers will be on foot, bicycles, patrol vehicles, unmarked vehicles and on TTC buses and streetcars watching for distracted drivers.
The Toronto Police Service and its members are committed to improving road safety, supporting victims and families of traffic crimes and to Toronto’s Vision Zero Road Safety Plan.
