The Toronto Police Service is continuing to focus its efforts on encouraging safe cycling as a practical mode of transportation in our city. Improving road safety and traffic flow for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists is one of our goals in support of the Service priority and commitment to safe communities and neighbourhoods. This initiative is part of the City of Toronto - Vision Zero Road Safety Plan. Vision Zero is a comprehensive five year (2016-2021) action plan focused on reducing traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries on Toronto's streets, the Plan prioritizes the safety of our most vulnerable road users, through a range of initiatives.

The Service will be launching the "S.P.A.C.E. to Cycle" Campaign, commencing on Monday, June 12, 2017. The campaign (Safety, Prevention, Awareness, Courtesy, Education) will conclude on Sunday, June 18, 2017. This one-week campaign is designed to promote awareness and education by reducing the potential for cycling and wheel sport-related injuries. Building partnerships and mobilizing local communities to respond to local traffic problems will assist in sustaining successful efforts and improve neighbourhood roadway safety.

Education and enforcement of cycling offences are critical to ensuring safe roadways for our communities. All frontline officers will be paying particular attention to those motorists whose actions endanger the lives of cyclists. For example, drivers failing to proceed through turns safely, opening vehicle doors improperly, and driving/parking in designated cycling lanes, all contribute to reduced cycling safety.

Officers will also be paying attention to cyclist's that commit offences that endanger all road users, including the cyclists themselves. Parking enforcement officers will assist in this initiative by concentrating on parking offences that may compromise the safety of cyclists.

Traffic Services is dedicated to ensuring the safe and orderly movement of traffic within the city of Toronto.

In conjunction with the Traffic Services campaign, a driver and cyclist safety video has been released.
