Media advisory, Wednesday, May 24, 2017, 11 a.m. - noon, 2200 Martin Grove Road, Operation Freeze Celebrating 10 years of Positively Speaking to Our Youth

$
0
0
The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of an upcoming community event on Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at 2200 Martin Grove Road between 11 a.m. and noon.

Mac’s Convenience Stores (Mac’s) is teaming up with Toronto Crime Stoppers, Toronto Police Service 23 Division officers and the Toronto Community Housing Safety Unit to recognize positive youth behaviour, which also reinforces that “doing the right thing” is also the “cool thing to do.”

This youth initiative, dubbed Operation Freeze, was developed by Mac’s in 2007 as part of their Crime Prevention Through Community Engagement strategy and provides police officers the opportunity to engage in the “positive ticketing of young people” who are observed doing random acts of kindness or exhibiting positive behaviour in the community. The “ticket” is actually a coupon valid for a free small Froster beverage at all participating Mac’s stores across Ontario.

In addition to recognizing good behaviour by youth, Positive Ticketing offers opportunities for officers to interact with youth in a positive manner - some officers may again use the coupons to recognize youth for wearing bicycle helmets, doing good deeds, participating in community activities, picking up trash, deterring crime or observing school-crossing rules – while others may use the coupons as literal “ice breakers” to establish a rapport with youth in their patrol area. The intention is to ensure that the “Positive Tickets” legitimately reinforce the positive behaviour exhibited by a youth, by offering something of value.

Though the reasons for being positive “ticketed” may vary, the end result of this youth initiative is the same for every youngster: a positive police-community experience and a free ice cold Froster beverage!

“Positive community engagement is an essential first step to breaking barriers and building trust” said Sean Sportun, ICPS - Manager, Loss Prevention & Security for Mac’s in Central Canada. “We are very excited about our 10th Anniversary of the Positive Ticketing program and the positive message it continues to deliver”.

Since the introduction of the Positive Ticketing Program, more than 1.3 million positive ticket coupons have been strategically issued by police officers to recognize and motivate Ontario’s youth for positive behaviour.

Modernization underway at Toronto Police Service, Quarterly report highlights progress on implementation

$
0
0
The first quarterly report was presented yesterday at the Toronto Police Services Board meeting, detailing the Service’s early implementation efforts that will eventually transform the organization into a new, modern police service.

Highlights included how the Service has:
• Created and staffed two teams – Project Management and Organizational Change Management – to carry out the modernization efforts;
• Completed six out of 32 recommendations;
• Realized $45M in savings/cost avoidance;
• Identified $4.5M in real estate that has been returned to the City of Toronto;
• Published and commenced a Change Plan; and,
• Updated the Modernization Scorecard available at: tps.on.ca/scorecard

“The key deliverables for the modernization effort will require a shift in the way we deliver our services, the tools we give our members and how we interact with our partners, communities and neighbourhoods,” explained Chief Mark Saunders. “We also knew that change of this magnitude would present challenges. We’ve learned that modernization will not be a straight line effort and the lessons we learn as we move forward will help overcome future challenges.”

The next quarterly report will take place at the Toronto Police Services Board meeting in August.

About the Action Plan: The Way Forward
Mandated to look beyond the way policing is currently done in Toronto, the Transformational Task Force (TTF) proposed a modernized policing model for the city that is innovative, sustainable, and affordable. The model will place communities at its core, be intelligence-led, optimize the use of resources and technology, and embrace partnerships as a means of enhancing capacity and capability. The final report - Action Plan: The Way Forward – contains 32 recommendations and was accepted by the Toronto Police Services Board in February, 2017 as the Service’s Business Plan for the next three years.
