Fatal collision #21/2017, Morningside Avenue, north of Sewells Road

On Friday, May 5, 2017, at 11:59 p.m., police responded to a call for a personal injury collision at Morningside Avenue, north of Sewells Road.

It is reported that:

- a man, 74, was driving a 1995 GMC van, southbound on Morningside Avenue, approaching Sewells Road

- a woman, 20, was driving a 2002 Acura MDX, northbound on Morningside Avenue, north of Sewells Road

- for reasons not yet determined, the GMC van crossed into the northbound lanes and collided with the northbound Acura MDX

- following that collision, a Mercedes-Benz was involved in a collision with the GMC van, and a Nissan Sentra struck the rear of the Mercedes-Benz

The driver of the GMC van was pronounced at the scene. The driver of the Mercedes-Benz was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The remaining drivers and passengers were uninjured.

Man, 21, arrested after police foot chase, The Esplanade and Scott Street area, Loaded .45 calibre firearm recovered, Man faces eight charges

The Toronto Police Service would like to inform the public of an arrest following a police foot chase.

On Saturday, May 6, 2017, at 11:11 p.m., officers were on patrol in the The Esplanade and Scott Street area.

It is alleged that:

- officers spotted a man in breach of court conditions

- he went into a crowded restaurant

- officers went to arrest him

- he struggled violently with the officers

- a loaded .45 calibre semi-automatic firearm was found concealed on him

Brandon Morgan, 21, of Toronto, has been charged with:

1) Carry Firearm in a Careless Manner
2) Possession of a Loaded Prohibited or Restricted Firearm
3) Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
4) Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
5) three counts of Fail to Comply with Recognizance
6) Fail to Comply with Firearms Prohibition

He appeared in court at Old City Hall on Sunday, May 7, 2017, 10 a.m., room 101.

On Tuesday, May 9, 2017, at 10:30 a.m., in the media gallery at headquarters, Financial Crimes Detective Sergeant Ian Nichol will update the public on arrests in an investigation called Project Royal.

Detective Constables Tim Trotter and Mike Kelly will also be in attendance.

Investigators will be displaying some of the recovered items, which include $310,000 worth of watches, some high-end jewellery, and other items seized during the execution of search warrants.

The news conference will be broadcast on the Bell TOC and live-streamed.

The Toronto Police Service is requesting assistance locating a missing man.

Elvis Canonizado, 19, was last seen on Friday, May 5, 2017, at 9 a.m., in the Bathurst Street and Steeles Avenue West area.

He is described as 6’0", 140 lbs., thin build, brown eyes, thin moustache, shaved head. He was last seen wearing a black winter coat, an orange long-sleeve shirt, jeans, carrying a black backpack.

Police are concerned for his safety.

Shyann Cave-Barton, 13, was last seen on Monday, May 8, 2017, at 8:30 p.m., in the Ranee Avenue and Varna Drive area.

She is described as 5'1”, 100 lbs., with long black hair. She was last seen wearing a black leather coat with grey on the sleeves, black jeans and black-and-white Jordan running shoes.

Police are concerned for her safety.

Man arrested in Fraud investigation, Charles Wallace, 54, faces 18 charges

The Toronto Police Service would like to advise the public of an arrest in an ongoing Fraud investigation.

It is alleged that:

- in May 2016, a man purchased car insurance from another man

- the man believed the insurance was valid

- in April 2017, the same man renewed his insurance

On Tuesday, May 2, 2017, Charles Wallace, 54, of Toronto, was arrested and charged with:

1) two counts of Fraud Under $5000
2) four counts of Uttering a Forged Document
3) five counts of Disobey Court Order
4) two counts of Sell a False Insurance Card that he or she knows or Ought to Know is False
5) two counts of Give a False Insurance Card that he or she knows or Ought to Know is False
6) three counts of Driving While Under Suspension

He appeared in court at 1000 Finch Avenue West, on Wednesday, May 3, 2017, 10 a.m., room 301.

Investigators are appealing to anyone who may have purchased insurance coverage from Charles Wallace to contact the Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario to verify if you have valid insurance.

Project Royal, Two men charged, one man outstanding

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of arrests in Project Royal.

The Toronto Strategic Partnership is a collaboration between the Toronto Police Service, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Competition Bureau of Canada, the Ontario Ministry of Government and Consumer Services, the Ontario Ministry of Finance, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.

Project Royal started in summer 2016 and focused on allegations of ongoing fraud committed by a group of persons located in the GTA.

It is alleged that:

- people lived a high-profile lifestyle of conspicuous consumption fueled by the proceeds of identity theft and fraud

- 37 fraudulently obtained credit cards, hundreds of pieces of presumably stolen mail, and a series of notebooks containing the handwritten identity information of approximately 5,000 GTA residents were seized

- details contained within the mail and notebooks served as a starting point for the commission of financial crime directed at Canadians and Canadian institutions, as well as those abroad, with losses exceeding $10 million

Adedayo Ogundana, 45, also known as Oladipupo Ogund, of Toronto, was arrested on Tuesday, December 13, 2016 and charged with:

1) two counts of Fraud Over $5000
2) 10 counts of Fraud Under $5000
3) Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000
4) Possession of Proceeds of Crime

He is scheduled to appear in court at 1000 Finch Avenue West, on Thursday, May 18, 2017, 9 a.m., room 301.

On Thursday, March 9, 2017, a Warrant in the First was issued for Duro Akintola, 44, also known as Michie Noah, of Toronto, wanted on several charges.

It is further alleged that:

- on Monday, April 24, 2017, a search warrant was executed at a Yorkville condominium where cash, watches, jewelry, clothing, and accessories were all seized

- all of the items are believed to be the proceeds of identity theft

On Thursday, April 27, 2017, Adekunle Johnson Omitiran, 37, of Toronto, surrendered to police. He was arrested and charged with:

1) Fraud Over $5000
2) four counts of Fraud Under $5000
3) two counts of Identity Theft
4) Trafficking Identity Information
5) Possession of Credit Card Obtained by Crime
6) Possession of Proceeds of Crime
7) Possession of Proceeds of Crime
8) Fail to Comply with Probation

He is scheduled to appear in court at College Park on Friday, May 19, 2017, 10 a.m., room 501.

Emmanuel Salako, 47, of Toronto, also known as Gee Salaq, indicted by the United States Postal Inspection Service in Chicago under the name George Salako, is wanted by the U.S.

Assistance to the Strategic Partnership was provided by members of York Regional Police, Canada Border Services Agency, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, Canada Post Investigations, Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada (FINTRAC) and members of the public.

Investigators believe that Adekunle Johnson Omitiran maintained connections to persons with legitimate access to identity information, who provided it to him for a fee. Investigators are seeking the assistance of the public in determining the identity of such persons.

This event will celebrate 150 years of Asian culture in Canada, with performances from students and community members who represent the communities within Toronto. Performances include the beautiful Chinese Fan Dance, the intriguing Yo-Yo performance, and the Asian Folk Rhapsody. Special Guest Emcee for the event is Melanie Ng.

Missing man located, Tarragona Boulevard and Gunns Road area, Tseten Phuntsok, 34

Man, 22, arrested in shooting investigation, Ellesmere Road and Kennedy Road area, Faces 18 charges including Attempt Murder

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of an arrest in a shooting investigation in the Ellesmere Road and Kennedy Road area.

It is alleged that:

- on Friday, May 5, 2017, at 12:40 p.m., police received a call for a shooting at 880 Ellesmere Road

- when officers arrived, they located two men with apparent gunshot wounds

- the men were taken to hospital where they received treatment for their injuries

On Monday, May 8, 2017, Bilal Haq, 22, of Mississauga, was arrested. He has been charged with:

1) two counts of Attempt Murder
2) Discharge Firearm with intent to endanger life
3) Careless use of a firearm
4) Careless storage of a firearm
5) Possession of a prohibited device or ammunition
6) Carrying a concealed weapon
7) Unauthorized possession of a firearm
8) Possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized
9) Unauthorized possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle
10) Possession of a loaded prohibited firearm
11) Possession of a firearm obtained by crime
12) Possession of a firearm knowing serial number has been tampered with
13) Possession of a firearm contrary to prohibition order
14) Fail to Comply with Recognizance
15) Possession for the purpose of Trafficking - Schedule 1 - Cocaine

Public Safety Alert, Danforth Avenue and Victoria Park Avenue area, Stolen medication

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of a quantity of stolen medication.

It is reported that:

- on Tuesday, May 9, 2017, between 12:15 p.m., and 1 p.m., three vials of prescribed methadone, at a dose of 40 mg per vial, approximately 20 prescribed morphine pills, and approximately 80 prescribed Endocet pills, were stolen in the Danforth Avenue and Victoria Park Avenue area.

The vials and pills could be harmful and possibly fatal if ingested, especially to children.

On Wednesday, May 10, 2017, beginning at 5:30 p.m., at Liberty Grand, Exhibition Place, 25 British Columbia Road, the Toronto Crime Stoppers Program will host its 21st annual dinner honouring Chief Mark Saunders.

Toronto Crime Stoppers is governed by a volunteer board of community members who serve on the Board of Directors to oversee the program. Board members meet regularly to manage and promote the program, raise funds and authorize reward payments. The Toronto Police Service provides a coordinator to manage the day-to-day operations, police officers to promote the School Crime Stoppers program and staff to take tips called into the Crime Stoppers 222tips hotline. Cash rewards of up to $2,000 are offered to people who contact Crime Stoppers and their information leads to an arrest.

Motorcycle fails to stop for police, Dufferin Street at Alma Avenue, Flees at high rate of speed

Police are seeking assistance identifying a driver who fled from police on a motorcycle in a residential and school area.

It is reported that:

- on Monday, May 8, 2017, at 1:13 p.m., a motorcyclist was observed by police on Dufferin Street at Alma Avenue

- police indicated for the motorcyclist to pull over

- instead the driver took off north on Dufferin Street at a high rate of speed

- the driver is believed to be a male and was wearing a black helmet with clear visor, a two-tone grey motorcycle jacket with a logo on the back with the words Harley Davidson, grey motorcycle pants, and white running shoes

- the motorcycle is described as a black sports motorcycle, possibly a Quebec licence plate starting with "15", which was tucked up under the seat on an angle.

This incident is dangerous in any setting, but was made worse by occurring in a residential and school area.

These incidents are happening far too frequently, Police are taking efforts to proactively enforce and investigate this and other incidents of failing to stop for police, stunt-driving and street-racing.

Members of the public are being asked to assist police with this and all similar incidents by providing any picture or video evidence they might have or making a telephone call when they know of someone who rides a motorcycle in a manner described in this release.

The incident was captured on police dash camera, and images have been released.

Boy, 17, arrested for internet hoax, People invited to shootout at Scarborough Town Centre

The Toronto Police Service would like to inform the public of an arrest in a social media hoax investigation.

On Tuesday, May 9, 2017, at approximately 9 p.m., a complaint was made to officers of a social media posting inviting people to the Scarborough Town Centre to engage in a gun battle.

It is alleged that:

- people were invited to bring friends to a gunfight

- the posting offered a reward of $10,000 cash to the winner

- the event was scheduled to occur at Scarborough Town Centre on Wednesday, May 10, 2017, at 6 p.m., in the Walmart parking lot

A 17-year-old boy, of Toronto, has been arrested. He is charged with:

1) Mischief Interfere with Property
2) Being a Common Nuisance

He is scheduled to appear in court at 1911 Eglinton Avenue East, on Thursday, May 11, 2017, 9:30 a.m., room 408.

He cannot be identified under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

In the interest of public safety, additional officers will be assigned to patrol the Scarborough Town Centre area.
