March is Fraud Prevention Month. Every day, youth engage in online and digital activities that put their reputations at risk. Some of these activities have made national headlines.
On Tuesday, March 7, 2017, at 10 a.m, students at Central Toronto Academy,
570 Shaw Street, will be teaming up with community partners in an event called #DontBFooled to educate their peers about protecting themselves online.
This event is a joint initiative between TPS Financial Crimes and 14 Division. This event will be hosted by the Toronto District School Board at Central Toronto Academy. The aim is to enhance public outreach on financial crime, scams and consumer protection issues.
#DontBFooled will feature a series of dramatic presentations performed by Central Toronto Academy students that will be complemented by short speeches by engaging experts including:
• Detective Constable Warren Bulmer, TPS social media specialist
• Bonnie Levine, Victim Services Toronto
Jared Boivin and Sarah Moniz, grade 11 students at Central Toronto Academy, will serve as Masters of Ceremonies.
On Tuesday, March 7, 2017, from 10 a.m to 11 a.m., students and members of the public will be encouraged to tweet questions and comments at #DontBFooled hashtag on Twitter.
Following the event, selected students and Toronto District School Board representatives will be available for media interviews.
Because what youth do online can affect their future, including their finances, this event is being held during Fraud Prevention Month. For more information on Fraud Prevention Month in Canada follow the #FPM2017 hashtag on Twitter.
