Public Safety Alert, Synthetic marijuana, Seized in 14, 54 and 55 Divisions, Photographs of products released

$

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of products being sold in variety stores across Toronto. Health Canada recently released warnings relating to "smoking herbal incense" products. Health Canada warns that smoking these products can produce symptoms ranging from seizures to hallucinations to acute psychosis. They further state that “synthetic cannabinoids” are illegal and subject to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

The Toronto Drug Squad began an investigation into the selling and distribution of the above products in February 2013. As a result of this preliminary investigation, 55 packages were seized on Monday, March 4, 2013. No charges were laid and store owners were cautioned and reminded the packets are illegal. The investigation is ongoing.

Health Canada has examined products marketed under various brand names. The products seized in Toronto were sold under brand names such as IZMS Grape Drank, and Luau Love, and falsely marked as 100% legal. Photographs of some of these products have been released.

The colourful and misleading marketing has encouraged school-age children to purchase the packages. Seizures have been made as result of concerned educators becoming aware of products available near schools.

Any business-owners in possession of the described products should call police. The Toronto Police Service will continuing checking businesses for these illegal products and investigate the distribution chain.
