Media advisory, “Do the Bright Thing!” Campaign Monday, March 4, 2013, 6:30 a.m., Union Station Concourse

On Monday, March 4, 2013, at 6:30 a.m., in the Union Station concourse, Toronto Police Service, Traffic Services, along with its government and corporate partners, the Ministry of Transportation and GO Transit (Division of Metrolinx), will embark on a one week pedestrian safety education campaign entitled, “Do The Bright Thing!”.

This campaign will directly engage the public, with the goal to promote wearing reflective or bright-coloured clothing, when possible, and to heighten public awareness of pedestrian safety.

“The need to be aware, alert and visible at all times on any road, even in the most routine circumstances, is a key component to ensuring your safe arrival at your destination. This applies to all pedestrians, drivers, cyclists and transit users alike,” says A/Superintendent, Gord Jones, Toronto Police Service, Traffic Services.

“On average 100 people were killed per year in pedestrian related accidents in Ontario over the past three years. Simply wearing reflective or bright clothing can help save lives,” said Glen Murray, Minister of Transportation.

Pedestrians should use caution when using the roadway or near moving trains and vehicles (including buses), ensuring whenever possible that they are seen by motorists. Wearing brighter clothing or reflective materials can potentially increase a person’s visibility when interacting with other road traffic.

Let's all work together to make the rest of the winter season safe and enjoyable.
