Media advisory, Sunday, May 5, 2013, 11 a.m., Corner of Grosvenor Street/Queen's Park Crescent, Ontario Police Memorial Ceremony of Remembrance

On Sunday, May 5, 2013, the 14th annual Ceremony of Remembrance for Ontario's fallen police officers will take place.

All 253 names will be read aloud, beginning at 10 a.m., by two officers representing the latest graduating class from the Ontario Police College.

Music from the Ceremonial Band of the Waterloo Regional Police Service, and songs from members of the Ontario Police Choruses, will be performed prior to the arrival of the Procession of Honour.

Police pipe bands will lead officers from across Ontario and the United States in their march around Queen's Park, arriving at the Memorial shortly before 11 a.m., for the official start of the Ceremony of Remembrance.

The official party in attendance will be the Honourable David C. Onley, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario; the Honourable Kathleen Wynne, Premier of Ontario; the Honourable Madeleine Meilleur, Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services, and the families of the fallen officers.

Two names have been added this year to the Wall of Honour:

- Guelph Constable Jennifer A. Kovach - 2013

- Cobourg Constable William Rourke - 1915

The Ontario Police Memorial Foundation (OPMF), host of the annual Memorial Service, continues with its research to fulfill its goal of ensuring that every fallen officer from Ontario will not be forgotten.

The Ontario Police Memorial ceremony will be live-streamed by a community and police team on YouTube. The link for the stream will be posted Sunday morning on the official social media platforms of the Ontario Police Memorial Foundation.

Procession of Honour route:

At 10:15 a.m., the Procession of Honour will start along the following route:

- Formation: Queen’s Park Crescent, all lanes
- Southbound Queen’s Park Crescent West, southbound lanes
- Northbound Queen’s Park Crescent East, northbound lanes
- Dispersal Queen’s Park Crescent, northbound lanes

Road closures:

- Associated route – Traffic Control 8 a.m.-2 p.m.,:
- Hoskin Avenue, from St. George Street to Queen’s Park Crescent
- Queen’s Park Circle, from Bloor Street West to College Street
- Wellesley Street West, from Queen’s Park Crescent West to Bay Street

The Toronto Police Service is requesting the public's assistance locating a missing man.

Ramiro Zamora Hernandez, 55, was last seen on Thursday, May 2, 2013, at 10 a.m., in the Carlton Street/Parliament Street area.

He is described as white, 5'2"-5'4", 120-140 lbs., with brown eyes, a black goatee, and short salt-and-pepper hair.

Police are concerned for his safety.

On Monday, May 6, 2013, at 10:30 a.m., in the media gallery at headquarters, Detective Sergeant Gary Giroux of the Homicide Squad will announce a $50,000 reward for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the person responsible for the murder of Nighisti Semret, on Tuesday, October 23, 2012.

In addition, Detective Sergeant Giroux will release new information.

Public assistance sought identifying man with gun, Security camera images of man released

The Toronto Police Service is seeking the public's assistance identifying a man.

It is reported that:

- on Thursday, May 2, 2013, at 10:41 p.m., a man was seen at the St. George subway station with a gun tucked into his waistband while on board a subway train

- 39 minutes later, at 11:20 p.m., the same man was seen at St. George subway station's Bedford Street exit, again with a gun tucked into his waistband

- 40 minutes later, on Friday, May 3, 2013, at 12:20 a.m. the same man was seen on the subway at St. George subway station, this time loading a magazine into the handgun

- 20 minutes later, at 12:40 a.m., the same man was seen in the Christie Street/Bloor Street West area with the gun concealed in his front hoodie pocket

- 40 minutes later, at 1:20 a.m., the same man was seen in the Christie Street/Barton Avenue area

The man is described as white, 18-21, 6', 160 lbs., with short, dark-brown hair and slight facial hair on his chin. He was wearing a black Blue Jays baseball cap, grey Adidas hoodie, grey skinny jeans (possibly acid-wash), and purple or blue high-tops with white laces.

The gun is described as having a black handle with a silver body. At one point, it was described as having a laser sight attached to it.

The man should be considered armed and dangerous. If seen, do not approach. Call 9-1-1.

Public Safety Alert, Increase in break-and-enters,

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of an increase in break-and-enters.

It is reported that:

- three homes in the Bloor Street West/Windermere Avenue area were entered between 2 a.m. and 3:05 a.m., while the residents were asleep in the home

- the suspect(s) entered either through a back or side door and stole items left near the door

- a similar incident was reported in the Keele Street/St. Clair Avenue West area

Man faces nine charges in sexual-assault investigation, Eric Alexander, 48, Police believe there may be more victims

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of an arrest in a sexual-assault investigation.

It is alleged that:

- on Saturday, May 4, 2013, a woman made contact with a man through an Internet personal ad on Craigslist, and met with him at a downtown hotel

- after a period of time, they attended a hotel room

- during the evening, unknown to the woman, the man place a substance in her drink, which she consumed

- the woman was sexually assaulted by the man

Eric Alexander, 48, of Toronto is charged with:

1. Administer Drugs for Sex
2. Sexual Assault
3. three counts of Possession for Purpose of Traffic (Schedule I)
4. three counts of Possession for Purpose of Traffic (Schedule III)
5. Possession for Purpose of Traffic (Schedule IV)

He is scheduled to appear in court at Old City Hall on Monday, May 6, 2013, room 101, 10 a.m.

Police believe there may be more victims.

Wanted man, Vinbert Samuels, 30

The Toronto Police Service is seeking the public's assistance locating a wanted man.

It is alleged that:

- Vinbert Samuels, 30, of Toronto, is wanted on 54 charges across the GTA for break-and-enters, thefts, robberies, and violent assaults against police in an attempt to avoid apprehension

- in several of the break-and-enters, he would steal car keys, return at a later time, and steal the car

He is described as black, 6'2", 220 lbs, with black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen driving a stolen white Lincoln SUV.

He is to be considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached. If seen, please call 9-1-1.

Traffic fatality #13/2013, Yonge Street, north of Gerrard Street

On Saturday, May 4, 2013, at 2:50 p.m., police responded to a personal-injury collision on Yonge Street, north of Gerrard Street.

It is reported that:

- a 42-year-old man was driving a 2003 Suzuki GSX600F motorcycle northbound on the Yonge Street, north of Gerrard Street

- the driver of the motorcycle changed lanes, to the curb lane, to pass a slowing vehicle

- a pedestrian, a 21-year-old woman, stepped into the northbound curb lane of Yonge Street and was struck by the motorcycle

- the motorcyclist became separated from his bike and struck a light pole

- the motorcycle continued to roll north and mounted the east sidewalk, where it struck another pedestrian

The driver was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died.

Sexual Assault Alert, Sylvan Avenue/Gladstone Avenue, Man wanted

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of a sexual assault investigation.

It is reported that:

- on Sunday, May 5, 2013, at 9:05 p.m., a 33-year-old woman was walking through Dufferin Grove Park, having just finished a run

- she exited the park on the south side at Sylvan Avenue and crossed to the south west corner of Sylvan Avenue/Gladstone Avenue

- a man approached her from behind and sexually assaulted her

- she yelled at the man, who then walked quickly eastbound on Sylvan Avenue towards Havelock Street

The man is described as having a dark-black complexion, 20-25, 5'10" - 5'11", with tall, thin build. He was wearing a white T-shirt, black or navy-blue Adidas pants with a white stripe and light-coloured runners. He was clean-shaven and had white earbuds in.

Piratheepan Thuraisingam, 31, was last seen on Friday, May 3, 2013, at 7 p.m., at the bus terminal in Ottawa, en route to Toronto.

He is described as brown, 5’11”, 198 lbs., with a muscular build, brown eyes, and short black hair.

Police are concerned for his safety.

Homicide #43/2012, Nighisti Semret, 55, Update, DNA evidence received and $50,000 reward authorized

On Tuesday, October 23, 2012, at 7:04 a.m., police responded to an unknown trouble call on Ontario Street.

See previous release.

A full forensic examination of the attack scene, the deceased and the deceased's clothing, was undertaken with the assistance of the Centre of Forensic Sciences – Biology Section. Numerous forensic submissions were made.

As a result of this examination the following is alleged:

- the victim scratched her attacker as DNA of a male was found under the fingernails of the deceased's right hand

- DNA of a male was found on the canvas portion of the umbrella used by the the citizen who confronted the man as the attack was occurring

- DNA of a male was detected on the black "Catie" canvas bag the victim was seen carrying

- the offender wounded himself during the attack with the knife he was carrying, which he may or may not have been treated for medically

- the DNA profiles are all from the same male

Investigators are appealing to the public to think back to October 2012, and recall any person who may have been tending to a hand or arm wound.

The Toronto Police Service is offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the person responsible for the murder of Nighisti Semret.

It is reported that:

- on Friday, May 3, 2013, between 10 a.m. and noon, a container of methadone was lost on board an eastbound King Street TTC streetcar

These drugs could be harmful/fatal if ingested, especially to children.
