Missing Children's Day: Working together to help find missing children and reunite families

$
0
0
For every missing child, there is a family that is incomplete – a family whose child has not come home. Across Canada, families have been living this nightmare for days, months and even years. These families need to know that they are not alone.

That's why today, on International Missing Children's Day, the Toronto Police Service and the Canadian Centre for Child Protection (Canadian Centre) would like to remind Canadians about the importance of joining the search for a missing child.

Assistance from the public is vital when a child goes missing. Any information can help and may be the key piece needed to assist police or provide answers to a family.

"It's critical that we keep missing children’s stories in the public eye," said Christy Dzikowicz, Director of Missing Children Services at the Canadian Centre. "The reality is that someone out there knows something about these disappearances, and we all have a responsibility to do everything we can to help bring a child home."

No one expects their child to disappear but, every year, police across Canada receive more than 40,000 reports of missing children.

MissingKids.ca, operated by the Canadian Centre, complements the important work of law enforcement by offering families additional resources to help find their missing children.

The service provides a central place for families to register their missing child to request support from a trained caseworker, as well as critical educational information to help prevent children from going missing.

"Investigations involving missing children are especially difficult for our police officers," said Chief Mark Saunders. "It is our hope that, on this day of hope and optimism, we would get the one piece of information we need to solve our historic cases. The families of children like Nicole Morin, Holly Painter, Richard Marlow, Jermaine Mann, Nancy Liou and Amber Potts, deserve answers."

About Missing Children's Day: May 25th was proclaimed as Missing Children's Day in 1983 to mark the day in 1979 that 6-year-old Etan Patz left home to walk the two blocks to his New York City school bus and vanished. It is a day of renewed hope for families and a reminder for all Canadians to keep searching.

About the Canadian Centre for Child Protection: The goal of the Canadian Centre for Child Protection (www.protectchildren.ca) is to reduce child victimization by providing programs and services to the Canadian public.
