Public Safety Alert, Stolen Medication

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of a quantity of stolen medication.

It is reported that:

- on Sunday, March 24, 2013, a black knapsack, containing various prescription medication was stolen in the Church Street/Gloucester Street area.

The medication could be harmful if ingested, especially to children.

Man faces four charges in robbery investigation

On Tuesday, March 26, 2013, police arrested a man in connection with a robbery investigation.

It is alleged that:

- on Friday, March 22, 2013, at 2:06 p.m., a man entered a store in the Dundas Street West/Scarlett Road area

- the man produced a knife and made a demand for cash

- the man threatened to stab the victim

- the man fled the store with a quantity of cash

Yussef Abu-Hewaydi, 19, of Toronto, was charged with:

1) Robbery
2) Weapons Dangerous
3) Disguise with intent
4) Threatening Bodily Harm

He is scheduled to appear in court at Old City Hall, on Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at 10 a.m.

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of a robbery investigation.

It is reported that:

- on Monday, March 18, 2013, at 9:50 a.m., a man walked into a bank in the King Street West/Yonge Street area

- the man handed the bank teller a note demanding money

- the man left the bank with a quantity of money, dropping his scarf on the way out

He is described as 30-40, 5’6"-5’7", dark-brown hair with a moustache and beard. He was last seen wearing dark sunglasses, a winter hat with ear flaps, a white/dark jacket with letters on the left arm, possibly ‘ECKO’.

Public Safety Alert, Police request assistance with break-and-enter investigation

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of a series of break-and-enters in Toronto.

In March 2013, police investigated a break-and-enter which occurred while the homeowner was in his backyard.

This reported entry is very similar to a number of break-and-enters which occurred last year within the west-end and central area of Toronto.

It has been reported that:

- between April 2012 and October 2012, the suspect(s) circle a residential neighbourhood searching for homeowners tending to their yards

- the suspect(s) gain entry into the homes via unlocked doors or windows

- the suspect(s) obtain a quantity of items from the household, usually jewelry or electronics, and flee with the items

- the homeowner may not be aware that the incident took place until a later time

The Toronto Police Service is reminding the public to remain vigilant of their own property and the property of their neighbours.

55 Division’s Crime Management Team in its last installment of “"Wanted Wednesday" is looking for Muhammad Fahad, 25, of Toronto.

It alleged that:

- on Friday, October 26, 2012, a woman was walking along Gerrard Street East near Highfield Road,

- she was sexually assaulted by a man as she walked passed him

- a man was arrested and charged

- it was later determined that the man provided false identification

- he was released from custody, scheduled to appear in court on a future date but failed to do so

Muhammed Fahad, 25, of Brampton, is wanted for:

1. Sexual Assault
2. Acknowledge Bail in a False Name
3. Obstruct Peace Officer
4. Personation with Intent
5. Attempt to Obstruct Justice
6. Fail to Comply with Recognizance

He is described as 5'10", 200 lbs., with black hair and brown eyes.

The Toronto Police Service is continuing to request the public's assistance locating a missing man.

See previous release.

Stephen Lapowich, 29, was last seen on Friday, March 25, 2011.

He is described as white, 5’9”, 169 lbs., with a medium build, short brown hair and blue eyes.

Information was received to suggest that he was in the United States and possibly travelled to Puerto Rico.

The Toronto Police Service and his family are concerned for his safety.

Man faces five charges in child pornography

On Tuesday, March 26, 2013, members of the TPS Sex Crimes Unit - Child Exploitation Section made an arrest in a child pornography arrest.

It is alleged that:

- between January 1, 2013 and Tuesday, March 25, 2013 the accused surreptitiously made various video recordings for a sexual purpose of a person under the age of 18 years

- the victim was in a place where there would be a reasonable expectation of privacy

- a search warrant was executed and a quantity of computer equipment was seized

Desmond Patterson, 38, of Toronto, was arrested and charged with:

1. two counts of Voyeurism for a Sexual Purpose
2. two counts of Make Child Pornography
3. Possession Child Pornography

He was scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at 1000 Finch Avenue West, 2 p.m., room 306.

This project has been made possible by a grant from the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services and the Ministry of the Attorney General.

Public Safety Alert, Police request assistance with distraction theft investigation

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of a series of distraction thefts.

On Tuesday, March 26, 2013, police responded to a theft call in the Eglinton Avenue West/Dufferin Street area.

It is reported that an elderly woman was talking in the area and jewelry stolen from her.

Police have investigated approximately 20 such similar cases of distraction thefts over the past year.

In these investigations it is reported that:

- a vehicle pulls up and a woman gets out and approaches an elderly person on the street

- a driver remains in the vehicle and, on several occasions, there has been a toddler in a childseat in the back of the car

- sometimes the woman asks directions to a doctor's office or a pharmacy

- other times the suspect asks for financial help for a funeral or assistance with a planned trip

- the woman might ask the victim if she would like to sell some of her jewelry

- the conversation ends by the suspect giving the victim a hug

- during the course of the hug, the suspect removes the victim's jewelry, necklaces and earrings, and replaces these items with pieces of a lesser value

- in many instances, the victim does not realize her possessions have been taken until hours later

If approached in this way, members of the public are encouraged to keep a distance from the person and call police.

Man faces 42 sex-related charges

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of an arrest made in a sexual assault investigation.

It is alleged that:

- the accused is a grade 4/6 French teacher at Inglewood Heights Jr. Public School and has been a teacher with the Toronto District School Board since 2007

- between September 2012 and March 2013 the accused sexually assaulted and made comments to several students

On Wednesday, March 27, 2013, Christian Kpodjie, 53, of Toronto, surrendered himself to police. He has been charged with:

1. 16 counts of Sexual Assault
2. 12 counts of Sexual Exploitation
3. 14 counts of Assault

The accused appeared in court at 1911 Eglinton Avenue East on Wednesday, March 27, 2013, room 412 at 10 a.m.

A sexual assault is defined by the Criminal Code of Canada as any form of unwanted sexual contact. It includes, but is not limited to, kissing, grabbing, oral sex and penetration. The Toronto Police Service is requesting the public's assistance locating a missing man.

Gregory Bewsh, 61, was last seen on Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at 3 a.m., in the Sheppard Avenue East/Bayview Avenue area.

He is described as white, 6’3”, 220 lbs., stocky build, blond hair with blue eyes. He usually wears eye glasses.

Police are concerned for his safety.

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of a robbery investigation.

It is reported that:

- on Friday, January 25, 2013, at 8:25 p.m.,, five men, one armed with a handgun, entered a supermarket on Sheppard Ave East

- the suspect(s) approached four different cashiers who were open at the time

- they demanded the victims open the registers and then grabbed the cash out of the tills

- the suspects punched the victims in the head

The suspects were last seen wearing hoodies, masks, possibly balaclavas, and gloves.

Man faces two charges in theft investigation

On Tuesday, March 26, 2013, police arrested a man in connection with a theft investigation.

The accused was employed by the City of Toronto as an Accounts Payable Service Representative and the Financial Coordinator for the United Way Campaign for the City of Toronto.

It is alleged that:

- between 2006 and 2012, the accused stole money from the sale of tickets that were given to the United Way Campaign, so they could be sold at a discounted rate to employees of the City of Toronto to raise money for the United Way Campaign

- the accused used some of the proceeds for his personal benefit

Eldon Gerald Colpitts, 54, of Whitby, has been charged with:

1) Theft over $5,000
2) Theft by person required to account

He is scheduled to appear in court at Old City Hall on Monday, May 6, 2013, room 111, at 10 a.m.

Man arrested for impersonating a police officer, Police believe there may be other victims, Photograph of man released

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of an arrest in a fraud/impersonation investigation.

It is alleged that:

- between February 2012 and October 2012, the accused introduced himself as a Toronto police officer and produced a police badge

- he would provide victims with information that he was currently suspended from duty and required funds to help him with court fees

- he also advised victims that he could assist in obtaining a Canadian Residency Card or would be able to assist the victim with obtaining Permanent Resident Status

- in one case he requested money for an emergency

On Thursday, October 24, 2012, Di Yu, 27, of Toronto was arrested by 52 Division officers for:

1. Personating Peace Officer
2. Possession of Property Obtained by Crime

It is further alleged that:

- a police badge was seized from the accused at the time of his arrest

After this arrest, two additional victims came forward to police.

On Wednesday, March 27, 2013, Di Yu, 27, of Toronto, also known as Jason Yu and Jason Yudi, was arrested and charged with:

1. two counts of Personating Peace Officer
2. Theft Under
3. Fraud Under
4. Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under

He is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, May 9, 2013, at 1000 Finch Avenue West, room 301, 1 p.m.

Police believe there may be other victims. A photograph of the man has been released.

Foreign fugitive arrested, Mohammad Masroor, 50

On Thursday,March 28, 2013, the Toronto Police Service Fugitive Squad executed a Provisional Arrest Warrant under the Extradition Act for the arrest of Mohammad Masroor, 50.

He is wanted by U.S. authorities in Florida and Michigan for Criminal Sexual Contact (Person under 13). The offences are alleged to have occurred between 2000 and 2005.

It is alleged he arrived in Canada in 2008 from the United States.

He is currently held in custody, pending extradition to the United States.

Homicide #14/2013, Anthony Smith, 21

On Thursday, March 28, 2013, at 2:40 a.m., police responded to a shooting call on King Street West, near Portland Street.

Officers arrived and located two men on the sidewalk suffering from obvious injuries.

Both men were taken to hospital, one with life-threatening injuries, the other with non-life-threatening injuries.

On Thursday, March 28, 2013, in the afternoon, one of the victims succumbed to his injuries. He has been identified as Anthony Smith, 21, of Toronto.

A post-mortem examination is to be scheduled.

On Sunday, March 31, 2013, at 1:30 p.m., Detective Rob North will update the media on Homicide #15/2013 and provide details to those who have vehicles parked within the crime scene.

The media scrum will take place in the west parking lot of Yorkdale Mall, closest to Dufferin Street.

A news release will be posted on the TPS website following the scrum.
