The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of an ongoing fraud investigation.

It is reported that:

- between September 2012 and February 2013, a man walks into four small businesses advising he has a delivery for a neighbouring business which requires a delivery charge to be paid

- the man provides a name of an employee from the neighbouring store to support his story, knowing that the store is currently closed

- the victims are made to feel there is a sense of urgency associated to the package being delivered

- the victims comply with the request for approximately $75 cash to assist the store

- once the victim is able to reach the employee, whose name was provided by the man, it is determined the suspect fabricated the story to obtain the funds

It is further report that:

- between September 2012 and February 2013, the man contacts a small business by phone and states that he works in a near-by store and requires cash to pay a tow-truck driver

- a man enters the store stating he is the tow-truck driver

- the employee provides the man with approximately $100 on behalf of the employee he believes works at the neighbouring store

- it is later determined that nobody from the nearby store is aware of the incident and it is determined to be a fraud

There are several variations of this fraud and any similar incidents should be considered suspicious.

All information should be confirmed prior to providing any funds to an unknown person.
