Homicide #15/2013, Michael Nguyen, 23

On Saturday, March 30, 2013, at 8:07 p.m., police responded to a radio call for the sound of gunshots at Yorkdale Mall, 3401 Dufferin Street.

Officers responded and located two men in the west parking lot, suffering from obvious gunshot wounds.

One of the men was pronounced dead at the scene. He has been identified as Michael Nguyen, 23, of Toronto.

The second man, 24, was taken to hospital where he remains in critical, but stable, condition.

A post-mortem has yet to be scheduled.

The shooting occurred outside the mall in the west parking lot. Officers are continuing to interview witnesses, gather evidence from the scene and review security camera video.

Police believed there were many witnesses to the shooting who left the area prior to police arriving and have not yet spoken to police. Investigators are urging those people to call 32 Division at 416-808-3200.

A number of vehicles are parked within the crime-scene area. Vehicles parked west and east of Sears, within the crime scene tape, will be released shortly. Investigators are asking owners to go to the command-post vehicle, on South Service Road to Yorkdale Mall, closer to Dufferin Street, to speak to police and arrange for your vehicle to be released.

The crime-scene area is continues to be processed by police. Additional officers have been sent to the scene to assist with gathering forensic evidence. Vehicles parked outside this area can be picked up at any time.

On Sunday, March 31, 2013, York Regional Police Service responded
to a 9-1-1 on Steeles Avenue East.

As a result of this call, Toronto Police Service and York Regional Police Service attended a home at 336 Huntsmill Boulevard.

Police located, inside the home, a man and woman who were obviously deceased.

They have been identified as Ji (George) Jia, 59, and Shi (Shirley) Zhou, 51, both of Toronto.

A post-mortem examination is to be scheduled.

The deceaseds' son, Li Tian Jia, 26, of Toronto, was arrested at the scene and charged with:

1. two counts of First-Degree Murder.

He appeared in court at Old City Hall on Monday, April 1, 2013.

Missing boy, Jeremy Wheesk, 13

Jeremy Wheesk, 13, was last seen on Thursday, March 28, 2013, at approximately 7 p.m., at the Malvern Community Centre, 30 Sewells Road.

He is described as Aboriginal, 5'9", with a medium build, and medium-length black hair. He was last seen wearing a white jacket, dark pants, dark shoes and a black knapsack.

Police are concerned for his safety.

The Toronto Police Service is requesting the public’s assistance locating a missing woman.

Olga Dubelt, 79, was last seen on Thursday, March 28, 2013, at 4:45 p.m., in the Elizabeth Street/Gerrard Street West area.

She is described as white, 5’4", thin build, 85lbs., with grey, short, collar- length hair. She was last seen wearing a grey/purple knitted winter hat, glasses, navy blue knee-length jacket with buttons, black or navy blue pants, black boots, and was carrying a large black bag.

Police are concerned for her safety.

Thomas William Jennings, 78, was last seen on Friday, March 29, 2013, at 3 p.m., in the Finch Avenue West/Wilmington Avenue area.

He is described as white, 5’7”, 165 lbs., bald, blue eyes, thin build, has a mole under left eye. He walks slowly and noticeably hunched over. He was last seen wearing a plain blue baseball cap, white oversized sweatshirt, baggy khaki pants and a 3/4-length nylon burgundy jacket.

Police are concerned for his safety.

Ahmed Abdullahi, 23, was last seen on Sunday, March 31, 2013 at approximately 8 a.m., near the intersection of Jane Street/Shoreham Avenue.

He is described as black, 6', 161lbs., medium build, brown eyes, short black hair with a full beard. He was last seen wearing a white cotton sweatshirt, black nylon vest, and a black leather baseball hat with a Toronto Maple Leafs logo.

He was last seen entering a newer white SUV.

Public Safety Alert, Indecent exposure investigation

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of an indecent exposure investigation.

On Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at 6:20 p.m., police responded to an indecent exposure call at the Dufferin Subway station.

It is reported that:

- at approximately 4:17 p.m., a man riding on the Bloor line eastbound subway, exposed himself somewhere between the Kipling Subway Station and Dufferin Subway Station.

- the man committed an indecent act while on the subway, then followed a woman as she exited the train

- he was last seen walking south on Dufferin Street

The man is described as black, approximately 5’7", 190 lbs., 35-36. He was wearing a navy New York Yankees baseball hat, navy blue winter jacket, black running shoes and had a black Nike knapsack.

Two men face 18 charges in Chinese fraud/robbery investigation, Police believe there may be more victims

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of two arrests in a fraud/robbery investigation.

It is alleged that:

- two men approached Chinese victims, spoke to them in Cantonese, and provided a number of different stories to the different victims as to why the men were in need of money

- the victims gave money to the men as they believed the men were in great need of the money

- the victims ranged in age from 19-35, both men and women, of Chinese descent

On Sunday, March 31, 2013, two men were arrested.

Wilfred Wing Leung, 37, and Kin Sing Cheung, 31, both of Markham, have each been charged with:

1. two counts of Attempt Fraud Under
2. five counts of Fraud Under
3. Robbery

Wilfred Leung is charged with an additional two counts of Fraud Under.

They have appeared in court at Old City Hall on Monday, April 1, 2013.

Police belive there may be more victims.

Sexual Assault Alert, Gerrard Street East/Broadview Avenue

The Toronto Police Service is alerting the public to a sexual assault that occurred on Saturday, March 30, 2013, at approximately 12:45 a.m.

It has been reported that:

- a woman was waiting in the Gerrard Street East/Broadview Avenue area for TTC transportation when a taxi drove past her, then circled back toward her

- the taxi driver asked if she needed a ride

- the woman had limited funds but the taxi driver agreed to drive her to her destination

- when the taxi driver reached the destination, he sexually assaulted her

The vehicle is described as an orange/turquoise four-door taxi.

The man is described as having a light-brown complexion, 45-50, thin build, with black receding hair, partially bald, and unshaven.

"Catch-22" wanted man arrested, Faces eight charges in Attempted Murder investigation

On Saturday, March 30, 2013, a wanted man was arrested in Windsor by members of 22 Division Major Crime Unit with the assistance of the R.O.P.E. Squad.

A 28-year-old man, of Toronto, has been charged with:

1. Kidnapping
2. Forcible Confinement
3. Attempted Murder
4. Aggravated Assault
5. Assault with a Weapon
6. Possession of Prohibited Weapon
7. Robbery
8. Break and Enter

He appeared in court at Old City Hall on Sunday, March 31, 2013, 10a.m., room 111.

The name of the accused can no longer be published. A publication ban has been ordered by the judge which prohibits the publication of the accused's name and any information learned through the court proceedings.

Man faces 15 charges in fraud investigation

In January 2013, acting on information provided by the Insurance Bureau of Canada and Aviva Canada Inc., police started an investigation into a man allegedly misrepresenting himself as a licensed physician.

It is alleged that:

- the accused owned and operated Lindsay Medical Laser Therapy in Lindsay, Ontario

- the accused led the public and various insurance companies to believe he was a licensed physician when he is not licensed to practice medicine in Ontario

The police investigation led to a Canada-Wide warrant issued for the arrest of the accused.

On Tuesday, March 26, 2013, Arun Reddy, 31, of Alberta, was arrested in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta.

He has been brought back to Ontario to face the following charges:

1) four counts of Fraud Over $5,000
2) seven counts of Attempted Fraud Over $5,000
3) three counts of Fraud Under $5,000
4) Attempted Fraud Under $5,000

He is scheduled to appear in court at 1911 Eglinton Avenue East, on Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at 10 a.m., room 407.
