The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of an arrest in an Identity Theft and Fraud investigation.
It is alleged that:
- between September 2016 and January 2017, a man befriended multiple women he met using the social media app Instagram
- over this time period, the man groomed the women into trusting him
- the man persuaded the women to give him their personal and family member's official Canadian identity documents such as passports, citizenship cards and Ontario Health Insurance cards
- the man then used the identities to defraud the women by purchasing cell phones and obtaining bank credit cards at various locations in the Scarborough area
On Friday, January 27, 2017, Nivethanan Sivagurunathan, 19, of Toronto, was arrested and charged with:
1) Identity Theft
2) two counts of Theft under $5000
3) Fraud over $5000
4) Possession of property obtained by crime under $5000
He is scheduled to appear in court at 1911 Eglinton Avenue East, on Thursday, March 9, 2017.
