Vision Zero, TPS launch permanent traffic enforcement team

$
0
0
The Toronto Police Service has launched a permanent traffic enforcement team dedicated to reducing the number of serious and fatal collisions in the city.

The Vision Zero Enforcement Team is an intelligence-led squad that will be highly visible and will proactively target drivers committing offences that are known to cause collisions, particularly the most serious collisions.

Two groups, made up of eight traffic constables and one sergeant each, will be out in both marked and unmarked vehicles identifying and charging those who speed, drive while distracted, drive aggressively and drive impaired – known as the ‘Big 4’ offences.

Using data and intelligence, they will be strategically deployed to locations across the city – morning and night - where there are higher collision rates and concerns around dangerous driving behaviour.

The proactive unit will expand on existing Service-wide traffic enforcement, educational work and planned traffic campaigns, in a multipronged approach to intercept, educate and enhance public awareness regarding unacceptable driving behaviours.

A temporary initiative was launched in January after approval by the Toronto Police Services Board and since that time, the team has been responsible for issuing more than 29,000 tickets for “Big 4” driving offences.

Chief Jim Ramer announced the full-time permanent team in August this year which will now be rolled out on to Toronto’s roads.

It follows a commitment by the Service and the City of Toronto to reduce traffic-related deaths and injuries on the city’s roadways as part of the Vision Zero Safety Plan.

"We are working to implement every aspect of the City's Vision Zero Road Safety Plan to make our streets safer for everyone. Today, we are demonstrating how we continue to address road safety within the city and how it continues to be a top priority for myself, City Council and the Toronto Police Service," said Mayor John Tory. "The Vision Zero Enforcement Team will proactively target drivers committing collision-causing behaviors. We know it will influence driving behaviour, increase deterrence and encourage all road users – especially drivers – to obey the law."

Chief Ramer said: “Traffic Safety impacts all of us in Toronto. Increasing enforcement will send a clear message to drivers who put road users at risk and break the law - they will be charged.

“While we recognize that some collisions are inevitable in a city the size of Toronto, those that result in death and serious injury are preventable and unacceptable. Too often, those most serious collisions are the result of drivers who speed or drive distracted. This Vision Zero Enforcement Team will be there to put the brakes on bad driver behaviours.”

He added: “With evidence-based strategic deployment and increased police presence and visibility, this team will bring us one step closer to our vision of zero fatalities on our roads.”
