Focused on Vulnerable Road Users, Safety for Pedestrians Campaign, November 4 - 10, 2019

$
0
0
Vulnerable road users continue to be over represented in traffic collisions in Toronto. This is especially true during November’s daylight savings time change.

Year to date in 2019, more than 50 people have been killed on Toronto’s roads. Thirty one of these victims were pedestrians, while more than 80% of these victims were 55 or older. Many of these pedestrian deaths happened on arterial roads which are wide, signalized streets that carry high volumes of traffic.

To bring this to our various communities' attention, between November 4 and November 10, 2019, the Toronto Police Service will commence a week long “no tolerance for excuses” enforcement and community engagement campaign. It will will focus on “The Big 4” driver behaviours that are known to cause injuries to people who walk on our roads. Speeding, driving while distracted, driving while impaired and driving aggressively are main factors that cause collisions.

It is equally important to create conversations about road safety in our communities and provide opportunities to get people to talk about the daily risks that we all take each day. These risks include crossing the road mid-block and turning at intersections. Between 2014 and 2018 40% of all collisions, where a pedestrian was killed or seriously injured, happened mid-block and over the same time. A total of 27% happened when a driver was turning left at a signalized intersection.

Toronto’s Vision Zero Road Safety Plan acknowledges that collisions are inevitable but collisions where someone is killed or seriously injured (KSI) are preventable and unacceptable. Zero injuries and deaths on our roads is the number that we all should be working towards.
