Students from St. Bernard Catholic School participated in a bicycle safety rodeo on Wednesday, September 18, 2019 following speeches from partners on the importance of wearing helmets when cycling.

Chief Mark Saunders says protecting children is vital and the law:

“Our officers are called to the scene of so many heartbreaking and preventable injuries that occur when people were just trying to enjoy a sunny day or get themselves to school or work. We want people to do everything to protect themselves and to remember, when it comes to our children and teenagers wearing a helmet is the law. Anyone under 18 must wear a helmet.”

Rory McGuckin, Director of Education for Toronto Catholic District School Board, adds:

“At Toronto Catholic, we aim to educate our students about the realities affecting their lives today, including the risk of concussions from physical injury. With the help of the 2019 Ontario Health and Physical Education curriculum, we’re proud to provide our students with the skills and knowledge they need to lead safe, healthy and active lives, including wearing a properly fitted helmet.”

Dorothy McDowall, Trauma Patient Care Coordinator at SickKids, says:

“Brain injuries can have effects that last a lifetime and many of these injuries that occur while cycling are preventable by always wearing a helmet. Even if just one child comes to the SickKids emergency department injured because they weren’t wearing a helmet while cycling, it’s one child too many.”

Dr. Eileen de Villa, Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health for Toronto Public Health, adds:

“Cycling, inline skates and other forms of active transportation are a great way to get outside, have fun and stay healthy. While only children and youth under 18 years old are required by law to wear a helmet, we encourage everyone participating in wheeled activities to stay safe and wear a helmet, regardless of age, to protect themselves from preventable injuries that may occur."
