Ten people arrested in series of robberies including Thistletown Collegiate Institute robbery and shooting

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of numerous arrests made in a series of robberies, including the robbery and shooting at Thistletown Collegiate Institute.

It is alleged that:

- between Tuesday, January 8, 2013, and Thursday, March 7, 2013, a series of 18 armed robberies took place in Toronto, plus one in Peel Region, and two in York Region

- the majority of the robberies targeted retail stores, robbing them of money, cigarettes, cell phones, and lottery tickets

- on Thursday, March 7, 2013, the robberies targeted three locations: Thistletown Collegiate Institute, followed by two retail stores

- during the robbery at Thistletown Collegiate Institute, it is further alleged that a firearm was discharged during the commission of the robbery

On Thursday, March 7, 2013, the Toronto Police Service Hold Up Squad, with the assistance of Divisional Major Crime Units and surveillance officers, arrested a group alleged to have been responsible for this series of robberies in the Jane Street/Driftwood Avenue area.

In addition, 10 search warrants were executed in Toronto, with an additional search warrant in Peel Region.

It is further alleged that the firearm used at Thistletown Collegiate Institute, and several prior robberies, has been seized.

Stefan Kendall, 42, of Toronto, is charged with:
1) four counts of Robbery while armed with a firearm

He appeared in court at 1000 Finch Avenue West, courtroom 301, on Monday, March 11, 2013, at 10 a.m.

Abdikarim Abdi, 18, of Toronto, is charged with:
1) Conspiracy to commit indictable offence
2) five counts of Robbery while armed with a firearm
3) five counts of Disguise with intent

He is scheduled to appear in court at 2201 Finch Avenue West, courtroom 203, on Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at 10 a.m.

Abdikarim Nur, 19, of Toronto, is charged with:
1) Conspiracy to commit indictable offence
2) three counts of Robbery while armed with a firearm

He is scheduled to appear in court at 2201 Finch Avenue West, courtroom 206, on Tuesday, March 13, 2013, at 10 a.m.

A 17-year-old boy, of Toronto, is charged with:
1) Conspiracy to commit indictable offence
2) two counts of Robbery while armed with a firearm
3) two counts of Disguise with intent
4) Robbery

He is scheduled to appear in court at 2201 Finch Avenue West, courtroom 204, on Monday, March 18, 2013, at 10 a.m.

A 16-year-old boy, of Toronto, is charged with:
1) Conspiracy to commit indictable offence
2) Robbery while armed with a firearm
3) Disguise with intent
4) Possession of property obtained by crime - under

He is scheduled to appear in court at 2201 Finch Avenue West, courtroom 204, on Tuesday, March 12, 2013, at 10 a.m.

A 15-year-old boy, of Toronto, is charged with:
1) Conspiracy to commit indictable offence
2) Possession of property obtained by crime - under

Yonis Hashi*, 19, of Brampton, is charged with:
1) Conspiracy to commit indictable offence
2) two counts of Robbery
3) five counts of Disguise with intent
4) eight counts of Robbery while armed with a firearm
5) three counts of Unauthorized possession of a firearm
6) three counts of Possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized
7) Fail to comply - probation
8) three counts of Use firearm to commit indictable offence
9) Possession of property obtained by crime - under
10) two counts of Possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition

He is scheduled to appear in court at 2201 Finch Avenue West, courtroom 206, on Friday, March 15, 2013, at 10 a.m.

Mohamed Ali-Mudei*, 18, of Toronto, is charged with:
1) Conspiracy to commit indictable offence
2) seven counts of Robbery while armed with firearm
3) Discharge firearm endanger life
4) five counts of Disguise with intent
5) three counts of Unauthorized possession of a firearm
6) three counts of Possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized
7) three counts of Use firearm to commit indictable offence
8) Robbery
9) two counts of Possession of property obtained by crime - under
10) two counts of Possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition

He is scheduled to appear in court at 2201 Finch Avenue West, courtroom 206, on Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at 10 a.m.

Djama Riyaleh*, 18, of Toronto, is charged with:
1) Conspiracy to commit indictable offence
2) 10 counts of Robbery while armed with firearm
3) five counts of Disguise with intent
4) Discharge firearm endanger life
5) three counts of Unauthorized possession of a firearm
6) three counts of Possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized
7) three counts of Use firearm to commit indictable offence
8) Robbery
9) Possession of property obtained by crime - under
10) two counts of Possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition

His court appearance has not yet been scheduled.

Khalid Hassan*, 19, of Toronto, is charged with
1) Conspiracy to commit indictable offence
2) 27 counts of Robbery while armed with firearm
3) 19 counts of Disguise with intent
4) Discharge firearm endanger life
5) three counts of Unauthorized possession of a firearm
6) three counts of Possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized
7) three counts of Use firearm to commit indictable offence
8) Robbery
9) two counts of Possession of property obtained by crime - under
10) two counts of Possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition

He is scheduled to appear in court at 2201 Finch Avenue West, courtroom 203, on Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at 10 a.m.

On Tuesday, March 12, 2013, at 5:50 a.m., members of the TPS Gun and Gang Task Force executed a search warrant at a home in the Albion Road/Weston Road area.

It is alleged that:

- police seized a chrome Smith & Wesson .38 Special Revolver and a .380 Lorcin semi-automatic handgun, including ammunition

- police also seized a quantity of cocaine.

Bashir Qureshi, 31, of Toronto, has been charged with:

1) Possession of a restricted firearm with ammunition
2) Possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized
3) Unauthorized possession of a firearm
4) Careless storage of a firearm

On Friday, March 1, 2013, the Toronto Police Service issued a news release about a wanted man arrested in a stabbing investigation at Davisville subway station.

After further investigation, the accused faces new charges.

On Friday, February 1, 2013, police responded to a call for an assault at the Finch subway station

It is alleged that:

- the accused approached a man, grabbed him by the neck and choked him

- the accused then threatened the man

On Tuesday, February 12, 2013, police responded to a call for an assault at the North York Centre.

It is alleged that:

- the accused grabbed a security guard and punched him in the face repeatedly

Cassim Cummings, 20, of Toronto, has been additionally charged with:

1) two counts of Assault
2) Threaten Bodily Harm

He was scheduled to appear in court at College Park, on Tuesday, March 12, 2013, at 10 a.m.

1) First-Degree Murder

On Tuesday, March 12, 2013, Orville Campbell, 21, of Toronto, was arrested and charged with:

1) First-Degree Murder

They were scheduled to appear in court at 1911 Eglinton Avenue East on Tuesday, March 12, 2013, room 412, at 10 a.m.

Investigators continue to appeal to the several witnesses who were at the shooting scene to come forward, including anyone who saw the accused men in the area in the days or weeks following the murder.

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of an arrest made in a Child-Luring investigation.

It is alleged that:

- between approximately Sunday, February 24, 2013, and Tuesday, March 12, 2013, a man made attempts to meet two different boys under the age of 14 for the purpose of committing sexual interference

- the man used various social media chat and web sites to communicate with the boys, including the profiles:

  • Google - ianwilliamwoods@gmail.com
  • Kik - woodsey69
  • Skype - pcdoctor87
  • Skype - Whats Good!!!
  • Facebook - Woodsey Woods

- the man also used the app, MeetMe, possibly using the user name "go leafs go".

On Tuesday, March 12, 2013, at 10 a.m., Ian William Woods, 25, of Burlington, was arrested. He is charged with:

1) two counts of Attempt Sexual Interference
2) two counts of Luring a Child - under 16
3) Luring a Child - under 18
4) Fail to comply with Recognizance

Computer equipment was seized from his home during a search warrant.

He is scheduled to appear in court at College Park on Wednesday, March 13, 2013, 10 a.m., courtroom 501.

Police believe there may be more victims.

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of a robbery investigation.

It is reported that:

- on Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at 2:50 a.m., the victim was operating a taxi cab in the Yonge Street/Harlandale Avenue area

- a man entered the victim’s taxi and asked him to drive to the Addington Avenue/Burnett Avenue area

- the man then choked the victim and robbed him of his cell phone

- the man ran from the taxi, westbound on Burnett Avenue

The suspect is described as brown, with a light complexion. He was last seen wearing a dark jacket and black pants.

Since November 2012, the TPS Financial Crimes Unit has partnered with the Financial Service Commission of Ontario to educate the public about financial crimes and fraud through the use of social media.

Every Thursday evening, from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. EST, these two agencies host a one-hour forum on Twitter called "#Fraudchat." This program seeks to educate and exchange ideas with the public about financial crimes and fraud. The moderators for this program are Kristen Rose, Senior Communications Officer of the Financial Services Commission of Ontario, and Detective Sergeant Cameron Field of the Financial Crimes Unit.

Tonight's program will cover auto insurance frauds and how to detect and avoid this costly crime. Auto insurance fraud costs everyone who pays premiums for coverage. #Fraudchat is pleased to have the Financial Services Commission of Ontario and the Insurance Bureau of Canada as our expert guests.

Aggravated Assault and Robbery of taxi driver, Tylor Duhamel, 18, faces three charges

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of an arrest in the aggravated assault and robbery of a taxi driver.

On Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at 8:05 p.m., police responded to a call in the Lake Shore Boulevard West/Thirty-Eighth Street area.

It is alleged that:

- a taxi driver picked up a man in the Gerrard Street East/Jones Avenue area

- the man asked to be taken to Lake Shore Boulevard West and Thirty-Eighth Street

- once at the location, the man attacked the taxi driver with a knife

- when the taxi driver managed to get out of his taxi, the man drove off in the taxi

- a passer-by found the taxi driver collapsed on the side of the road and called 9-1-1

- the man abandoned the taxi a short distance away and was arrested on foot.

The 56-year-old taxi operator was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries to the back of his head and hand.

Tylor Duhamel, 18, of Toronto, is charged with:

1) Aggravated assault
2) Assault with weapon
3) Robbery

Alexandra Richardson, 24, was last seen on Thursday, March 14, 2013, at 2:50 a.m., in the Airdrie Road/Millwood Road area.

She is described as white, approximately 5'9", 180 lbs., with dark, curly, shoulder-length hair. She was wearing a maroon puffy coat with a fur-trimmed hood, brown corduroy pants, and a navy top. She was carrying a purse, and may have injuries to one or both arms.

Police are concerned for her safety.
