Public Safety Alert, Contaminated street drugs, Update

The Toronto Police Service would like to update the Public Safety Alert about continuing incidents of suspected Fentanyl overdose in the downtown area.

It is reported that:

- on Friday, July 28, 2017, a man was located in a park in the Bathurst Street and Dundas Street West area, without vital signs.

He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced.

It is believed his death may have been the result of a Fentanyl overdose.

There have now been a total of three deaths and 17 incidents of overdose in the downtown area since Thursday, July 27, 2017.

Anyone coming into contact with a substance suspected to be heroin should exercise extreme caution.

The public is also asked to call police immediately should any potentially dangerous items be located in parks or public areas.

Missing man, Lawrence Avenue West and Jane Street area, Domingos Martins, 83

The Toronto Police Service is requesting assistance locating a missing man.

Domingos Martins, 83, was last seen on Friday, July 28, 2017, at approximately 4:30 p.m., in the Lawrence Avenue West and Jane Street area.

He is described as 5’4”, 180-200 lbs., bald, has difficulty walking. He was last seen wearing a black shirt with “Martins” written on it and blue shorts.

Police are concerned for his safety.

The Toronto Police Service would like to update the Public Safety Alert about continuing incidents of suspected overdoses in the downtown area.

It is reported that:

- on Saturday, July 29, 2017, at 1:42 p.m., a woman was found in a stairwell in the Queen Street East and Trefann Street area

- the woman was pronounced at the scene

- the initial investigation suggests her death was drug-related

The investigation is ongoing and it is too early to determine if it is Fentanyl-related but there were similarities with other cases.

There have now been a total of four deaths and 20 incidents of overdose since Thursday, July 27, 2017.

Missing man, Milner Avenue and Markham Road area, Alexander Meleskewicz, 84

The Toronto Police Service is requesting assistance locating a missing man.

Alexander Meleskewicz, 84, was last seen on Saturday, July 29, 2017, at 10:44 a.m., in the Milner Avenue and Markham Road area.

He is described as over 6', short grey hair, wearing a grey/blue long-sleeve shirt, grey pants, black shoes. He is known to use a mobility walker and has a distinct hunch. He may be wearing a wrist band that is beeping.

Man wanted in Sexual Assault investigation, Lake Shore Boulevard West and Thirty Sixth Street area

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of a Sexual Assault investigation.

It is reported that:

- on Thursday, July 27, 2017, at approximately 11:30 p.m., a woman, 23 was walking in the Lake Shore Boulevard West and Thirty Sixth Street area.

- a man, riding a bicycle, approached the woman and sexually assaulted her

- the man fled on the bicycle westbound on Lake Shore Boulevard West

He is described as white, early-to-mid 30s, 6’0”-6’1”, thin-to-medium build, light or dirty-blonde buzz-cut-style hair, unshaven. He was last seen wearing grey or blue-and-white striped T-shirt, dark pants.

Assistance sought identifying men in Arson investigation, 120 Scollard Street, Security camera video now available

The Toronto Police Service is requesting assistance with an Arson investigation in the Yorkville area.

It is reported that:

- on Friday, June 30, 2017, at approximately 2 a.m., two men attended 120 Scollard Street, a business in the Yorkville area, and attempted to break the glass door using rocks

- the men then lit the front door area on fire, using an accelerant

Security camera video is now available:

- walking to scene
- in front of business
- Arson
- running away

Rush-hour route enforcement campaign, Monday, July 31, 2017 to Friday, August 4, 2017

The enforcement of the city's rush-hour routes and other traffic and parking offences continues to be a priority for the Toronto Police Service.

The TPS will be launching a heightened rush-hour route enforcement campaign with a focus on traffic congestion and gridlock within the downtown core. There will be zero tolerance for vehicles found blocking and congesting rush-hour routes.

The campaign will start on Monday, July 31, 2017, with the enforcement of the morning rush-hour routes and will conclude on Friday, August 4, 2017. Parking Enforcement Officers and officers from Traffic Services will be saturating the downtown core to tackle gridlock by ticketing and towing vehicles obstructing rush-hour routes.

Since January 1, 2017, TPS Parking Enforcement has issued 46,370 parking infractions and towed 9,637 vehicles from the city’s rush-hour routes.

Members of the media are welcome to participate in ride-alongs with members from Parking Enforcement. To arrange a ride-along, please call Brian Moniz at 416-808-1612.

The TPS will be utilizing its Twitter account (@TorontoPolice) to highlight results of this campaign.

Police request assistance with shooting investigation, Cameron Street, north of Queen Street West

The Toronto Police Service is seeking assistance with a shooting investigation.

It is reported that:

- on Friday, July 29, 2017, at approximately 12:10 a.m., four men were involved in discharging a firearm multiple times in the Cameron Street, north of Queen Street West area.

- a motor vehicle was struck multiple times, causing significant damage

- no one was struck with any rounds

- the suspects then fled the area in an SUV of unknown colour, last seen northbound on Cameron Street.

The four men are described as;

- black, 6’0”, 170 lbs, 18-21, dark clothing

- black, 6’0”, 200 lbs, 18-21, dark clothing

- black, 5’11”, 170 lbs, 18-21, dark clothing

- black, 5’7”, 160 lbs, 18-21, dark clothing

They should be considered armed and dangerous. Do not approach them, Call 9-1-1 immediately.

He is described as 5’6”, skinny build, short black hair, last seen wearing a grey sweater and blue jeans.

Police are concerned for his safety.

Police request assistance with Sexual Assault investigation, Rosedale Valley Road and Bayview Avenue area

The Toronto Police Service is making the public aware of a Sexual Assault investigation.

It is reported that:

- on Sunday, July 30, 2017, at approximately 4:30 a.m., a man met a woman in the Yonge Street and Queen Street West area.

- the man led the woman to St. James Cemetery

. he then forced her into a wooded area off Rosedale Valley Road and Bayview Avenue

- the man sexually assaulted the woman

- the woman was able to fight off the man and escaped onto Rosedale Valley Road, where she was assisted by members of the public

The man is described as white, 31-35, approximately 5’6”-5”7”, unshaven, short blonde hair, medium build, with a potbelly, wearing a blue jacket and grey shirt.

It is reported that:

- on Sunday, January 1, 2017, at approximately 3 a.m., a 33-year-old woman was in the King Street West and Peter Street area

- a man approached the women and offered her a ride home

- she entered the passenger seat of the car and was sexually assaulted by the man

The man is described as 5'5", 180-200 lbs., wearing a black-and-white sweater, jeans, dark shoes.

On Tuesday, August 1, 2017, at 10 a.m., in the media gallery at police headquarters, Toronto Crime Stoppers, with the support of Chief Mark Saunders, will launch a new campaign designed to raise awareness about human trafficking.

Created in partnership with DDB Canada and Tribal Toronto, Toronto Crime Stoppers will be joined by members of the Service’s Human Trafficking Enforcement Team and community partners.

Representatives from Crime Stoppers of York Region Inc., Peel Crime Stoppers and the Canadian Crime Stoppers Association will be in attendance.

The event will be available on the TOC and will be live-streamed here.

Homicide #29/2017, 235 Queen Street East

On Monday, July 31, 2017, at 11:17 p.m., police were called to 235 Queen Street East, for a shooting.

Emergency services personnel arrived and found four people with apparent injuries. Three were taken to hospital where they received treatment for their injuries. The fourth, a man, 32, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced in hospital.

The man's identity is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin.

On Tuesday, August 1, 2017, at 12:44 a.m., police responded to a call for a shooting in the Bathurst Street and Claxton Boulevard area

It is reported that:

- officers located a man with an apparent gunshot wound

- he was taken to a trauma centre, where he succumbed to his injuries and was later pronounced

Investigators have to notify next-of-kin before they are able to identify the deceased.

Traffic fatality #33/2017, Sherbourne Street and Dundas Street East, Man, 25, faces three charges

On Monday, July 31, 2017, at 7:13 a.m., a fatal collision occurred at Sherbourne Street and Dundas Street East.

It is alleged that:

- a man, 25, driving a black 2014 Honda CRX, travelling south on Sherbourne Street, left the road

- he mounted the west-side sidewalk on Sherbourne Street, just north of Dundas Street, and struck a man, 73

- the driver continued on the sidewalk and struck a man, 49, who was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries

- the vehicle came to a stop just south of Dundas Street East on Sherbourne Street

The man, 73, was pronounced at the scene

The driver was arrested at the scene.

Jonathan Power, 25, of Toronto, has been charged with:

1) Dangerous driving cause death
2) Dangerous driving cause bodily harm
3) Drive no licence.

He was scheduled to appear in court at Old City Hall on Tuesday, August 1, 2017, 9 a.m., room 101.

This area is built-up and is a busy part of the city. There are very likely people who may have seen all or part of this incident. Residents, business owners, motorists and witnesses are being asked to review any electronic camera equipment and come forward with any information they may have.
