Two adults and Young Person arrested, Birchmount Road and Lawrence Avenue East area, Drugs and gun seized

On Tuesday, June 6, 2017, with the assistance of the Emergency Task Force, officers from the 54 Division Major Crime Unit executed a Criminal Code search warrant at an address in the Birchmount Road and Lawrence Avenue East area.

It is alleged that:

- during the search of the residence, officers located a loaded 9mm semi-automatic firearm along with a quantity of illegal drugs

Cordel Da Silva, 18, of Toronto, was arrested and has been charged with:

1) Possession of a Prohibited Loaded Firearm
2) Possession of a Prohibited Firearm knowingly not holding a licence or registration certificate
3) Possession of a Prohibited Firearm knowingly not holding a licence
4) Careless Storage of a Firearm
5) Careless Storage of Ammunition
6) Possession of a Firearm knowing the serial number has been tampered
7) Possession of a Firearm Obtained by Crime
8) Possession of Cocaine
9) Possession of Marihuana


Jacklyn Da Silva, 46, of Toronto, was arrested and has been charged with:

1) Possession of a Prohibited Loaded Firearm
2) Possession of a Prohibited Firearm knowingly not holding a licence or registration certificate
3) Possession of a Prohibited Firearm knowingly not holding a licence
4) Careless Storage of a Firearm
5) Careless Storage of Ammunition
6) Possession of a Firearm knowing the serial number has been tampered
7) Possession of a Firearm Obtained by Crime
8) Possession of Cocaine
9) Possession of Marihuana

Both were scheduled to appear in court at College Park on Tuesday, June 6, 2017, room 507.


A 17 year-old boy, of Toronto, has been arrested. He has been charged with:

1) Possession of Firearm other than restricted or prohibited firearm knowingly not holding a licence
2) Possession of Restricted or Prohibited firearm knowingly not holding a licence and registration certificate
3) Careless Storage of a Firearm
4) Careless Storage of Ammunition
5) Possess loaded regulated firearm
6) Possess firearm obtained by crime
7) Possession of a Firearm with altered serial number
8) Possession of a Firearm Obtained by Crime
9) Unlawfully Possess Schedule I Substance CDSA 4(1)
10) Unlawfully Possess Schedule II Substance CDSA 4(1)
11) three counts of Fail to Comply Condition of Judicial Release

The Young Person cannot be named under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

The Young Person was scheduled to appear at court at 311 Jarvis Street on Tuesday, June 6, 2017.

Arrests in Robbery investigation, Yonge Street and Finch Avenue area, Four boys face charges

The Toronto Police Service would like to inform the public of arrests in an ongoing Robbery investigation.

It is alleged that:

- on Saturday, June 3, 2017, at 3:45 a.m., four boys, one aged 17 and three aged 16, robbed a boy, 17, in the Yonge Street and Finch Avenue area.

It is further alleged that:

- on Monday, June 5, 2017, at 4 p.m., three boys, aged 17, 16 and 16, robbed a boy, 17, in the Yonge Street and Finch Avenue area.

- one of the boys was carrying a concealed weapon at the time of the offence

The four boys were arrested and have each been charged with:

1) two counts of Robbery
2) Carry concealed weapon

The four boys were scheduled to appear in court at 2201 Finch Avenue West on Tuesday, June 6, 2017, 10 a.m.

The four boys cannot be identified under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Missing woman, Borough Drive and Progress Avenue area, Amirah Swaden, 43

The Toronto Police Service is requesting assistance locating a missing woman.

Amirah Swaden, 43, was last seen on June 5, 2017, at approximately 4:25 p.m., in the Borough Drive and Progress Avenue area.

She is described as brown, 5’, 200 lbs., black hair in a ponytail, brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a pink sweater with “PINK” written on front, blue jeans and blue-and-white shoes.

Police are concerned for her safety.

Missing woman located, Borough Drive and Progress Avenue area, Amirah Swaden, 43

Four arrests in violent home invasion investigation, One man outstanding, Security camera images and video released

Toronto Police Service Hold Up would like to make the public aware of an ongoing violent home invasion robbery and shooting investigation.

It is alleged that:

- on Monday, February 20, 2017, three men and two women attended an apartment building in the Yonge Street and Sheppard Avenue West area

- two of the men and one woman entered the building via the underground

- two men knocked on the victim's apartment door which was opened by the male victim

- two men rushed into the apartment and demanded money and jewellery from him

- he struggled with the two men who were armed with a handgun and a screwdriver

- one man fired two shots at him and the other man stabbed him in the head with a screwdriver

- one of the bullets struck the victim in his left shoulder

- the two men stole several items from the victim's home before fleeing

After an investigation by TPS Hold Up, four people have been arrested

- investigators are seeking assistance identifying the outstanding man

On Saturday, May 27, 2017, Andre Allen, 26, of Scarborough, was arrested and charged with:

1) Robbery While Armed with a Firearm
2) Attempted Murder
3) Forcible Confinement
4) Aggravated Assault
5) Discharge Firearm Endanger Life
6) four counts of Possession of a Firearm Contrary to a Prohibition Order

He is scheduled to appear in court at Old City Hall, on Monday, June 12, 2017, 11 a.m., room 114.


On Tuesday, May 16, 2017, Krystle Cormack, 33, of North York, was arrested and charged with:

1) Conspiracy to Commit Indictable Offence
2) Robbery while Armed with a Firearm
3) Attempted Murder
4) Forcible Confinement
5) Aggravated Assault

She is scheduled to appear in court at 1000 Finch Avenue West on Thursday, June 22, 2017, 9 a.m., room 301.


On Thursday, March 23, 2017, Mark Bollers, 27, of North York, was arrested and charged with:

1) Conspiracy to Commit Indictable Offence
2) Robbery While Armed with a Firearm
3) Attempted Murder
4) Forcible Confinement
5) Aggravated Assault
6) Discharge Firearm Endanger Life
7) two counts of Fail to Comply with Recognizance

He is scheduled to appear in court at 1000 Finch Avenue West, on Thursday, June 22, 2017, 9 a.m., room 301.


On Thursday, March 16, 2017, Toni Baxter, 26, of North York, was arrested and charged with:

1) Attempted Murder
2) Discharge Firearm with Intent to Wound, Endanger Life
3) Aggravated Assault
4) Forcible Entry
5) Robbery while Armed with a Firearm

She is scheduled to appear in court at 1000 Finch Avenue West, on Thursday, June 8, 2017, 9 a.m., room 301.

Man, 31, charged with Assault on Parking Enforcement Officer, Annesley Avenue and Roxville Avenue area

The Toronto Police Service would like to inform the public of an arrest in an investigation into an Assault on a Parking Enforcement Officer.

On Tuesday, June 6, 2017, officers responded to a call for a dispute in the Annesley Avenue and Roxville Avenue area.

It is alleged that:

- a Parking Enforcement Officer approached a truck to issue a ticket

- a man placed himself in front of the licence plates to block the officer's view

- as she started to issue the ticket, he grabbed the ticket machine from her hands

- he squeezed her fingers in the process

- she was able to keep control of her machine

Alexander Peever, 31, of Toronto, has been charged with:

1) Assault

He is scheduled to appear in court at College Park on Thursday, July 20, 2017, 2 p.m., room 505.

Missing man, Queen Street West and Roncesvalles Avenue area, William Kurchak, 72

The Toronto Police Service is requesting assistance locating a missing man.

William Kurchak, 72, was last seen on Monday, June 5, 2017, at 5:45 p.m., in the Queen Street West and Roncesvalles Avenue area.

He is described as 5’10”, medium build, grey unkempt hair, balding, grey goatee. He was last seen wearing black, puffy, down jacket with Ralph Lauren logo, grey sweatpants, black slip-on shoes. He walks with a noticeable shuffle.

Police are concerned for his safety.

Shaun Rootenberg, 49, faces 12 charges in Fraud investigation

The Toronto Police Service would like to advise the public of an arrest in an ongoing Fraud investigation.

It is alleged that:

- a man named Shaun Rootenberg, using the alias Shaun Rothberg, used the services of the online dating site eHarmony to locate and defraud his victims

- he carried on intimate relationships with his victims, while convincing them to trust him with funds that he was to invest for their benefit

- this was a ruse used to get money from his victims

- the funds were never invested, but were used to fund the man's lifestyle

On Tuesday, June 6, 2017, at 8:15 a.m., Shaun Rootenberg, 49, of Thornhill, was arrested. He is charged with:

1) four counts of Fraud over $5,000
2) four counts of Possession of proceeds of crime
3) four counts of Laundering proceeds of crime

He was scheduled to appear in court at College Park on Wednesday, June 7, 2017, 10 a.m., courtroom #501.

On Thursday, June 8, 2017, at 10 a.m., in the lobby at police headquarters, the Toronto Police Service, in partnership with the Aboriginal Consultative Committee, will be hosting the National Aboriginal Day celebrations.

Chief Mark Saunders and Toronto Police Service Board Chair Andrew Pringle will be in attendance.

The event will feature traditional drumming and singing and will include community leaders Ontario Regional Chief Isadore Day and Jessica Wolfe, from Aboriginal Legal Services of Toronto, who will be speaking at the event.

Light refreshments will be served at the conclusion of the event.

30th Anniversary Portuguese Day Parade, Saturday, June 10, 2017, 11 a.m., Dundas Street West and Lansdowne Avenue area

On Saturday, June 10, 2017, the Alliance of Portuguese Clubs and Associations of Ontario will host the 30th Anniversary Portuguese Day Parade.

Road closures will be in place as follows:

Lansdowne Avenue, from Bloor Street West to College Street: from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m

Full road from 10:45 a.m. to 3 p.m.:
Lansdowne Avenue, from College Street to Dundas Street West
Dundas Street West, from Sorauren Avenue to Bathurst Street

The parade will begin at Lansdowne Avenue and College Street at 11 a.m. It will proceed southbound on Lansdowne Avenue to Dundas Street West, then eastbound on Dundas Street West to Trinity Bellwoods Park.

Motorists can expect delays in the area and should consider alternate methods of transportation.

The TTC will be rerouting buses during the event and will experience delays.

The parade will take place regardless of weather conditions.

"Shoppers Love. You. Run for Women," Saturday, June 10, 2017, Road closures

On Saturday, June 10, 2017, the "Shoppers Love. You. Run for Women” run/walk will be held. As a result, the following road closures will take place between 7 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.:

- westbound Grosvenor Street
- southbound Queen’s Park Crescent East
- westbound College Street on westbound curb lane
- northbound Spadina Avenue on northbound curb lane
- eastbound Bloor Street West on Eastbound curb lane
- southbound Bay Street on southbound curb lane
- westbound St. Joseph Street on north side curb lane
- northbound Queen’s Park Crescent East on full road looping around to
- southbound Queen’s Park Crescent West on east side lanes
- eastbound front driveway of Queen’s Park (on south side of Legislative Building)

The affected bus routes are the 5 Avenue Road and 94 Wellesley. Route 5 will turn back at Bloor Street as opposed to looping the southerly portion of Queen’s Park, while buses on the 94 Wellesley route will operate via Wellesley Street, Bay Street, College Street, St. George Street, and Harbord Street in both directions.

Media advisory, Thursday, June 8, 2017, 1 p.m., Headquarters, 40 College Street, 30th Anniversary of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics

On Thursday, June 8, 2017, at 1 p.m., the 30th Anniversary of the Law Enforcement Torch Run will take place at police headquarters.

This program was originally started by the Toronto Police Service in 1987. It involves a 3-km run and a 2.5-km walk for Special Olympics.

This event will start at 40 College Street and end at the Ballroom Bowl, 145 John Street.

Kumar Kothary, 56, and Shefali Kothary, 51, arrested in Fraud investigation, Police concerned there may be other victims

Toronto Police Service Financial Crimes would like to advise the public of arrests in an ongoing Fraud investigation.

It is alleged that:

- a man and woman falsely claimed to have power of attorney for a family member

- they falsely claimed that the family member had a severe blood disorder, diabetes, was legally blind, and had the mental capacity of an infant, none of which was true

- they fraudulently submitted various claims for reimbursement to Ministry of Community and Social Services for medical services, medical supplies, special diet, travel expenses and assistance for home services

- they submitted fraudulent applications claiming expenses related to "parent relief" to the Ministry of Family Services for additional funding, through a program called "Passport"

- the total loss to the Ministry of Community and Social Services is $86,581

On Tuesday, June 6, 2017, Kumar Kothary, 56, and Shefali Kothary, 51, of Toronto, were arrested. They are both charged with:

1) Fraud over $5000
2) Uttering forged documents

They were scheduled to appear in court at College Park on Tuesday, June 6, 2017, 2 p.m.

Police are concerned there may be other victims in both the public and private sector.

Man arrested in ongoing Fraud investigation into online ticket sales, Nigel Noel, 28, facing four charges

The Toronto Police Service would like to advise the public of an arrest in an ongoing Fraud investigation.

It is alleged that:

- during April 2017, victims purchased hockey tickets from a person through an ad on Kijiji

- money was electronically transferred via email as payment for the hockey tickets

- once the money was transferred, the seller ceased all communication with the victims and did not transfer the tickets

On Wednesday, June 7, 2017, Nigel Noel, 28 of Toronto, was arrested. He is charged with:

1) three counts of Fraud under $5000
2) Identity Fraud

Investigators are appealing to anyone who may have purchased event tickets from a person unknown to them and sent an email money transfer to the following:

Man wanted in Sexual Assault/Robbery investigation, Wilson Avenue and Avenue Road area, Image of man released

The Toronto Police Service is requesting assistance identifying a man wanted in a Sexual Assault investigation.

It is reported that:

- on Wednesday, June 7, 2017, at approximately 3:45 a.m., a woman, 29, was walking in the Wilson Avenue and Avenue Road area

- she was attacked from behind and sexually assaulted by a man

- the woman fought off her attacker, who fled northbound on foot after robbing her of a small amount of money

The man is described as medium build, approximately 5’7”-5’8”, beard, wearing a toque, dark jeans, dark jacket with hood and dark running shoes.

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of a quantity of stolen medication.

It was reported that:

- on Wednesday, June 7, 2017, at approximately 12:30 p.m., a quantity of medication was stolen from a cafe in the Gerrard Street East and Church Street area.

The medication includes:

- Percocet tablets

- Hydramorphone pills

- Hydromorphcontan pills

- Muscle relaxant pills

- Water pills

- Anti-Depressant pills

The pills/capsules could be harmful/fatal if ingested, especially to children.

Helen Juratovic, 47, was last seen on Saturday, June 3, 2017, at 6:30 p.m., in the Martin Grove Road and Rexdale Boulevard area.

She is described as 5’5”, 100 lbs., thin build, brown eyes, long brown reddish hair, wearing blue jeans, grey shirt. She was with her dog, a black-and-white Shih Tzu named Lucky.

Police are concerned for her safety.
