On Thursday, May 18, 2017, from 9:30 a.m. to noon, at 259 Queen's Quay West, the Toronto Police Service Marine Unit and the Canadian Safe Boating Council (CSBC) will host the media to kick-off Safe Boating Awareness Week 2017.
Media will be taken onto one of the police launches for demonstrations of various types of inflatable lifejackets, Media are also invited to try their hand at retrieving mock victims from the water via a throw-bag. Drysuits are also available to those wishing to experience, first-hand, their effectiveness as a deterrent to hypothermia.
The Victoria Day long weekend is considered by many as the unofficial start of summer. The goal of this event, and Safe Boating Awareness Week, is to decrease the number of boating fatalities by educating the public as they begin their boating season with the knowledge and key boating safety tips to help ensure that every trip is a round trip.
