$

Today is Safer Internet Day, and the Toronto Police Service would like to take this opportunity to remind all parents and teachers of teens and tweens of the need to talk to youth about how they can keep themselves safe during online activities.

"The online risks youth face are increasingly difficult to manage," said Signy Arnason, Director of Cybertip.ca. "For parents, the need for reliable and current educational resources to help understand better these issues and how to increase their teen's skills and safety is crucial. We want to ensure Canadians know about our important internet safety resources and that we are here to help keep kids safe".

The Canadian Centre for Child Protection, through Cybertip.ca, is encouraging the public to get involved and help create a safer internet. There are several ways parents and teachers can get involved – most importantly, by talking to youth and reviewing the resources that are available online to help them. The information available at SaferInternetDay.ca, can be a good starting point for strategies for youth to be safe online.

The Toronto Police Service encourages parents and teachers to stay informed with trends in technology that may be concerning for our youth. Interested parents/teachers can sign up to receive alerts regarding concerning trends at: Cybertip.ca ALERTS

Any parents or teachers who have concerns about a youth being sexually exploited online should report the matter to Cybertip.ca. It is also important to let youth know about the website NeedHelpNow.ca, a website that provides practical information for youth who have been affected by having a sexual picture or video shared by peers.

It is our responsibility as a society, to protect our children from those who may do them harm. We need to work together to keep our youth safe. Please help us raise awareness of Safer Internet Day on social media by tweeting and posting about the above resources using the hashtags #SID2016 and #PlayMyPart.
