Three men arrested in $1.3 million robbery spree investigation, Toronto and York Region

The Toronto Police Service's Hold Up Squad has made three arrests in an armed robbery investigation where $1.3 million worth of property was allegedly stolen.

On Wednesday, April 29, 2020, officers responded to a call for an armed retail store robbery in the Leslie Street and Elgin Mills Road East area of York Region.

It is alleged that:

- a man entered a store, pulled out a black handgun and pointed it at an employee

- a second man then entered the store and the two men tied up the employee

- the men took a large amount of jewellery and the employee’s car keys

- the men got into the employee’s car and fled the scene

- the car was eventually located abandoned after being set on fire

On Saturday, November 28, 2020, officers responded to a call for an armed retail store robbery in the Bathurst Street and Sheppard Avenue West area of Toronto.

It is further alleged that:

- a man entered a store armed with a handgun and a knife

- the man assaulted the employee and then tied them up

- the man took a large amount of jewellery and the employee’s car keys

- the man got into the employee’s car and fled the scene

- the car was eventually located abandoned after being set on fire

Through funding provided by the Ontario Government, the Criminal Intelligence Service Ontario supported a year-long investigation started by TPS' Hold Up Squad. With further assistance from the Ontario Provincial Police, York Regional Police's Hold Up Squad, Durham Regional Police, Toronto's Integrated Gun and Gang Task Force, Toronto's Intelligence Services, 41 and 42 Division's Major Crime Units, 33 Division, Toronto's Drug Squad and Toronto's Court Services, they were able to identify three men involved in the robberies.

It is further alleged that:

- the Hold Up Squad conducted twelve search warrants and located three men involved

- clothing worn during the robberies was located

- a large amount of the stolen jewellery was recovered

- a loaded 9mm Ruger handgun was located

On Thursday, April 22, 2021, Shawn Fries, 55, of Woodville, was arrested. He is facing the following twenty three charges:

1. two counts of Robbery with a Firearm
2. Disguise with Intent
3. two counts of Conspiracy to Commit Indictable Offence
4. Pointing a Firearm
5. Forcible Confinement
6. Assault With a Weapon
7. two counts of Arson Causing Damage to Property
8. Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
9. Possession of Restricted Weapon Knowing it’s Possession is Unauthorized
10. Possession of Restricted Firearm with Ammunition
11. Possession of a Firearm Obtained by Crime
12. two counts of Careless Storage of a Firearm
13. two counts of Possession of a Firearm Contrary to Prohibition Order
14. two counts of Possession Property Obtained by Crime Over
15. three counts of Fail to Comply Release Order

He appeared in court on Thursday, April 22, 2021. His next scheduled appearance was at 1000 Finch Avenue West, on Tuesday, May 25, 2021 at 10 a.m., in room 301.

On Thursday, April 22, 2021, Julianno Petrella, 22, of Woodville, was arrested. He is facing the following nineteen charges:

1. two counts of Robbery With a Firearm
2. two counts of Disguise With Intent
3. two counts of Conspiracy to Commit Indictable Offence
4. two counts of Forcible Confinement
5. Assault With a Weapon
6. two counts of Arson Causing Damage to Property
7. two counts of Possession of Firearm Contrary to Prohibition Order
8. two counts of Possession Property Obtained by Crime Over
9. four counts of Fail to Comply Probation Order

He appeared in court on Thursday, April 22, 2021. His next scheduled appearance was at 1000 Finch Avenue West, on Tuesday, May 18, 2021 at 10 a.m., in room 301.

On Thursday, April 22, 2021, Aram Al-Kamisi, 26, of Bowmanville, was arrested. He is facing the following two charges:

1. Conspiracy to Commit Indictable Offence
2. Possession Property Obtained by Crime Over

He appeared in court for a Bail Hearing on Thursday, April 22, 2021. His next scheduled appearance is at 1000 Finch Avenue West, on Tuesday, June 1, 2021, at 10 a.m., in room 301.

Man charged with possession of firearm, Syrus Smith, 20, facing four charges

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of an arrest in a firearm investigation.


On Friday, May 21, 2021, at approximately 9 p.m., officers from 52 Division's Major Crime Unit were in the Front Street West and John Street area.

It is alleged that:

- a man was observed in possession of a loaded firearm in the front of his waistband

- after a brief struggle with police, the man was arrested.

Syrus Smith, 20, of Toronto, was charged with:

1. Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Firearm with Ammunition
2. Carrying Concealed Weapon
3. Possession of Firearm knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
4. Possession of a Firearm, Prohibited or Restricted Weapon Obtained by Crime

He appeared virtually at Old City Hall, on Saturday, May 22, 2021, at 10 a.m., in room 112.

Rebecca Mac, 31, was last seen on Tuesday, May 25, 2021, at 4 p.m., in the Don Valley Parkway and Don Mills Road area.

She is described as 5'8", medium build, with black shoulder length hair. She was last seen wearing a pink t-shirt with a floral pattern, navy blue shorts, white Converse shoes, carrying two black bags, a computer bag, and a duffle bag.

Police are concerned for her safety.

Man wanted in an assault investigation, Scarlett Road and Edenbridge Drive area, Person to be identified

The Toronto Police Service is seeking the public's assistance in identifying a man wanted in an assault investigation.

On Monday, May 24, 2021, at 3:30 p.m., police responded to a Robbery call in the Scarlett Road and Edenbridge Drive area.

It was reported that:

- a woman exited her vehicle and was approached by a male who pushed her and made a racial slur

- the woman verbally responded to the man who then grabbed her and made several attempts to strike her with his fist

- the woman suffered a medical episode and was hospitalized but is in stable condition

- the man then fled the area

Toronto Police 11 Division immediately launched an investigation and have identified a person of interest.

Man wanted on Canada-wide warrant, John Junior DaSilva, 24, Arrested

On February 17, 2021, The Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement (R.O.P.E.) Squad requested the public’s assistance locating a federal offender wanted on a Canada-wide warrant, and the Toronto Police Service issued a news release to assist.

John Junior DaSilva, 24, is wanted for breaching the conditions of his Statutory Release.

He is currently serving a two-year and two-month sentence for:

1. Possession of a firearm
2. Possession of a Narcotic For The Purpose Of Trafficking


On Friday, May 21, 2021, he was arrested.

Franklin Otaniyen, 15, was last seen on Tuesday, May 25, 2021, at 7:30 p.m. in the Kipling Avenue and Finch Avenue West area.

He is described as 6’1”, 200 lbs., medium build with short black hair in cornrows. He was last seen wearing a red tracksuit with the graphic MTG written on the back in black, black Nike Air Force 1s and a black Nike backpack.

Police seek assistance identifying man involved in Indecent Act investigation, 200 Elizabeth Street - Toronto General Hospital, Update, Man arrested and charged

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of an arrest made in an Indecent Act investigation.

On Friday, May 21, 2021 at approximately 7 a.m., police responded to a radio call for an indecent act at 200 Elizabeth Street (Toronto General Hospital).

It is alleged that:

- a man followed a female employee into the parking garage at Toronto General Hospital

- the employee locked herself in a bicycle cage to protect herself

- the man was unable to get into the bicycle cage but remained outside it and exposed his genitals

- the man eventually left the parking garage and was later seen approaching another female on Elizabeth street

On Monday, May 24, 2021, Mohamed Smimali Ahmed, 33, of no fixed address, was arrested and charged with:

1. Harassment By Threatening Conduct To Other Person
2. two counts of Fail To Comply With A Probation Order
3. Indecent Act

He appeared in court virtually at Old City Hall on Tuesday, May 25, 2021, 10 a.m., room 101.

Investigators would like to thank the public for their assistance with this investigation, especially those who called police to leave tips.

This remains an active investigation.

Missing Man, Located, Eastern Avenue and Logan Avenue area. Seaton Anthony Bentham, 77

Private Property Fatality #2/2021, 610 University Avenue

On Wednesday, May 26, 2021, at approximately 2:30 p.m., police received a report of a collision involving a pedestrian and a motor vehicle at 610 University Avenue.

It is reported that:

- a 89-year-old man was leaving the Murray Street entrance of Princess Margaret Cancer Centre located at 610 University Avenue

- the man stepped between two stopped cars that were in the patient pick-up and drop-off driveway of the centre

- as the man stepped between the two vehicles, a 2012 Chevrolet Cruz being driven by a 65-year-old man, moved forward and struck the man

- the man was then pinned between the Chevrolet and a stationary 2017 Toyota Sienna minivan, being driven by a 45-year-old man

- the man was transported to hospital but succumbed to his injuries

The investigation is ongoing by members of Traffic Services.
