Statement from Chief of Police James Ramer on today's verdict in the Yonge Street Tragedy trial

$
0
0
Today’s verdict is a step forward in what has been a long and painful case that impacted our entire city.

Of course, with an appeal period, this may not be the end. However, the finding of guilt on all charges may allow our community to try to turn a page to focus on healing together.

The effects of that day three years ago has stayed with the families and friends of those who were murdered or injured, and those who were left behind to mourn. It has stayed with those who witnessed the horrific scene and it continues to stay with every one of the first responders who attended.

I’d like to thank those members of the public who came forward to help the police investigation. We interviewed hundreds of witnesses and reviewed many images and videos sent to us to help this case.

I also want to thank all members of our Toronto Police who attended and investigated, our 911 communications operators who were flooded with emergency calls, as well as our other first responder partners at Toronto Fire and Toronto Paramedic Services.

We employed the expertise of our investigators from Homicide, Traffic Services and Forensic Identification Services. We worked collaboratively with the Office of the Chief Coroner, Victim Services Toronto, various consular services, and the Ministry of the Attorney General.

The Toronto Police Service will always remember the victims and their families as we move forward together, as a city, further away from this senseless tragedy.

While these products may be legal, they must be treated like any other prescription or over-the-counter drug and be stored in a locked area and in child-resistant packaging.
