The Police Officer of the Year Award is an annual tribute dinner held by the Toronto Region Board of Trade.
The Board created the award in 1967. Its purpose is to recognize members of the Toronto Police Service who have made significant contributions to making Toronto one of the safest cities in the world. Each month, an officer is selected for Police Officer of the Month, based on the following criteria: bravery, humanitarianism, superior investigative work and outstanding police skills.
Three years ago, the TPS Business Excellence Award was created. Its purpose is to recognize members of the Toronto Police Service who have made significant contributions to the Toronto Police Service and the City of Toronto. Each submission is judged on the following criteria: innovation, community service, technical achievement and customer service and reliability.
This year's Police Officer of the Year event will be held at the Toronto Region Board of Trade, 1 First Canadian Place, on Wednesday, June 5, 2013, at 6 p.m.

Police Officer of the Month for April 2012: Constable Mark Weber, 54 Division
Between July 16, 2011 and October 27, 2011 a man armed with a handgun was alleged to have committed 14 pharmacy robberies. Often, the man fled on a scooter.
On November 4, 2011, Constable Weber was assigned to observe a pharmacy while in plainclothes, in hopes of making an arrest. While on his assignment Constable Weber saw a man on a red scooter park near the pharmacy. It is alleged that the man placed a cloth mask over his face prior to entering the store. Constable Weber alerted other officers in the area and quickly took up position outside the pharmacy.
The man allegedly produced a handgun and ordered the pharmacist to hand over the narcotics from the safe. As the man exited the store, Constable Weber initiated a gunpoint arrest and identified himself as a police officer. The man got into a physical struggle with Weber, and the two men fell to the ground, still struggling. Weber's handgun was unholstered as they fought. Three citizens immediately came to Weber's assistance. Realizing that Weber was a police officer, they assisted him in subduing and securing the man.
In recognition of his brave actions and dedication to duty, Constable Mark Weber has been selected as Police Officer of the Month for April 2012.
