The Toronto Police Service will be hosting a OneMatch swab event on Thursday, November 5, 2015, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at headquarters, in recognition of a former officer’s battle against a rare form of lymphoma.

The OneMatch program is run by Canadian Blood Services (CBS), which matches potential stem cell donors to unrelated patients. Donors use a swab kit, which they swipe on the inside of their cheek. Potential donors undergo a procedure to donate their stem cells from their blood or bone marrow.

“Hundreds of Canadians require a donor for a stem cell transplant every year and more than 70 per cent of them will rely on someone they don’t know to help save their lives,” said CBS communications specialist Erin McGuey. “A wide variety of diseases and disorders are treated with stem cell transplants. They include specific forms of cancer like leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma and inherited immune system and metabolic disorders.

“At any given time, OneMatch is searching on behalf of hundreds of Canadian patients from varied ethnic backgrounds in need of a stem cell donor. Registrants must be in good health, between the ages of 17 and 35, and willing to donate to any patient in need anywhere in the world.”

The quickest way for people to register with OneMatch is by going to www.blood.ca to order a swab kit in the mail.
