On Thursday, March 5, 2015, at 4 p.m., the Junior Blues youth hockey program will be marking the end of yet another successful season, with a year-end game at Baycrest Arena, 160 Neptune Drive, and will see participants competing against one another while displaying the skills they have learned over the course of the 20-week program.
The Junior Blues youth hockey program is a Toronto Police Service-led program that has been in existence for over 20 years, and has enjoyed tremendous success. The program provides a rare and enjoyable opportunity to youth in our communities, giving them the opportunity to interact with officers and participate in a sport that, due to socioeconomic and other reasons, they may not have otherwise had the chance to play.
The participants are all at-risk youth who reside in the Neptune Drive and Lawrence Heights areas. The youth have been selected with the assistance of staff at area schools and the Lawrence Heights Community Centre. Generally, those who could most benefit from the program are selected.
The program allows the youth in our communities to interact with police officers in an informal, fun, and positive atmosphere. The participants, many of whom have never before skated or worn hockey equipment, are taught the fundamental skills of the game of hockey over the course of 20 weeks.
The objective of the program is to strengthen our communities by continuing to forge relationships between youth and police that are built on a mutual respect and understanding, while earning the trust and cooperation of the community. The end result is beneficial to the community and city at large, as these relationships contribute to safer communities and keep the city of Toronto the best and safest place to be.
The Junior Blues and many other great programs are run each year, and are all made possible with the generous and ongoing support of ProAction Cops & Kids. This organization was founded in 1991. It is the single-largest private funder of Toronto Police Service programs for youth, and has now expanded to include other police jurisdictions.
