On Saturday, June 14, 2014, starting at 8 a.m., the Toronto Police Amateur Athletic Association will be holding the 131st Annual Toronto Police Games, in co-operation with ProAction Cops & Kids. The Games are being held at Downsview Park, at 75 Carl Hall Road.
The Toronto Police Amateur Athletic Association is an organization that encourages fitness and camaraderie for members of the Toronto Police Service through sport and has serving members since 1881. Traditionally, the Police Games was a showcase in track and field events with Toronto Police officers competing against other regional police services.
ProAction Cops and Kids is an organization that was created in 1991 by John L. Bitove Sr. who realized the City of Toronto would benefit from its youth and police officers to have a better relationship. ProAction has become the largest private funder of Toronto Police programs for youth. ProAction believes that establishing a positive relationship between police and kids at risk will strengthen our community today, and for the future.
This year's Police Games have been remodeled and will feature five separate tournament sports competitions between Toronto Police Service officers from across the city. There will also be an 'All Star' game for each sport, between kids from ProAction Cops & Kids and Toronto Police Service officers.
There will be approximately 600 athletes participating in soccer, volleyball, flag football, 3-on-3 basketball and ball hockey. This one-day event is designed to bring together not only the officers but the community closer through sports competition.
There will be a Toronto Police Service static display of specialized units and their equipment. The Canadian Military will also join in with their own display. As well, there will be bouncing castles for children to enjoy while at the event.
There will be food available for purchase by the public at the event as well as a fabulous charity draw for numerous prizes. Proceeds of the draw will be going to the Toronto Police Widows and Orphans Fund.
