The Toronto Police Service, 53 Division, has the privilege of working with "Canada's Favorite Crossing Guard." This year's recipient, Jake Apacible, 78, was presented with the award by Parachute Canada and FedEx Canada on Friday, December 13, 2013.
Out of more than 175 nominees, he was selected to be one of four finalists, and was the only candidate from Ontario. He was ultimately selected as the winner.
Mr. Apacible has keeping the intersection of Rumsey Road and Broadway Avenue safe and protecting the children of Northlea Public School for over 10 years. Over his many years of service, he has been mentioned in several community newspapers, each commenting on his excellent work and the respect he has earned in the community.
53 Division Inspector Suzanne Walsh said: "The prestigious 'Canada's Favorite Crossing Guard' award is a true testament to Jake's dedication and commitment to community safety in the Northlea neighbourhood over the past decade. On behalf of the Toronto Police Service, and particularly 53 Division, we commend Jake for his accomplishment and thank him sincerely for his outstanding service in keeping our children safe and secure."
Community Response Unit Manager Staff Sergeant Matthew Moyer said: "Jake Apacible makes our city and our Division very proud. He champions the needs of the community and echoes the Toronto Police Service priority that speaks to public safety. When parents and teachers applaud their crossing guard and children in a neighbourhood feel safe, it is a tremendous credit to the great work done by Jake. He is placed in an area deemed as high-volume traffic and his efforts to ensure that the children from his area get to school safely are commendable. Rain, snow or even excessive heat and Jake brings his 'A-game' to the community. We congratulate him for setting and maintaining the high standard required for being 'Canada's Favorite Crossing Guard.'"
