2019 Back to School Message, Update - More than 1,750 tickets issued

$

More than 1,750 tickets were issued to drivers as part of a Back to School safety initiative.

Between Tuesday, September 3, 2019, and Friday, September 6, 2019, Traffic Services were outside schools across the city to educate and remind drivers, parents and communities about traffic safety.

The days of action were also supported by the media and members of the public on social media who helped spread the message.

See previous release.

Officers were able to identify drivers who were speeding, driving while distracted, driving aggressively, and those who had parked illegally.

In total 1,754 tickets were issued with sign offences (873) and speeding (625) the most common violations.

Sergeant Brett Moore thanked all those who helped share the Back to School message.

He said, “Making sure kids get to and from school safely is, and will continue to be, a priority for police. This work would not be possible without the support of parents and the local community.

Drivers must also recognize their role in all of this and they must stay focused and in control at all times so they can be prepared for any hazards or a change in road conditions.

We stopped too many drivers during the campaign who did not make this commitment. Speeding, being distracted, parking illegally and being in a rush often contribute to collisions, especially in busy areas with kids crossing roads.

Collisions do happen but by slowing down and keeping your eye on the road, it can prevent children from being seriously injured.

Parking illegally to drop someone off, speeding, being distracted or not stopping completely at a stop sign, are just some of the bad driving habits we see daily. You cannot take back a collision after it has happened.
