Media Advisory, 2019 Summer Safety Traffic Initiative June 24, 2019, 9:00 a.m., 9 Hanna Avenue

$

On June 24, 2019, at 9:00 a.m., members of the media are invited to the press conference to be held at Traffic Services, 9 Hanna Avenue, to inform the public about the 2019 Summer Safety Traffic Initiatives and how they connect to the goal of Vision Zero.

Speakers will include Inspector Warren Wilson of Traffic Services, Supervisor George Johnstone of Parking Enforcement Operations, and Sergeant Brett Moore of Traffic Services.

Traffic safety is a top priority for the Toronto Police Service and the communities that we serve. Research shows that drivers who speed, drive distracted, drive aggressively or drive impaired cause collisions that injure people. Far too often these victims are our vulnerable road users. These crimes are preventable and require people to choose to do things differently when behind the wheel of a motor vehicle. Driving safely must be the main priority.

In 2018, a total of 66 people were killed on Toronto’s roads, 54 of these people (81%) were vulnerable road users. Unfortunately, this trend continues into 2019.

To assist our front line members over the summer months, additional resources from Traffic Services and Parking Enforcement will be out in our communities to compliment enforcement to the front line officers. This initiative provides resources that will also compliment ongoing City of Toronto Road Safety Programs – Vision Zero, Congestion Management Plan (CMP) and Keep Toronto Moving.

This initiative is also a pillar to three other traffic initiatives during the summer:

1. Parking Enforcement Heavy Truck and Rush Hour Route Enforcement
2. Focused On Vulnerable Road Users – Safety for Cyclists Campaign – June 17-23, 2019
3. Focused On Vulnerable Road Users – Back to School Campaign – September 3 - 8, 2019

The Toronto Police Service and its members are committed to improving road safety, supporting victims and families of traffic crimes and to Toronto’s Vision Zero Road Safety Plan.
