Media advisory, Saturday, January 19, 2019, 12 p.m., Bargains Group, 890 Caledonia Road, 20th annual Project Winter Survival

On Saturday, January 19, 2019, at 12 p.m., at The Bargains Group, 890 Caledonia Road, over 210 social service agencies, outreach providers and homeless shelters will receive in excess of 3,000 survival kits in an effort to arm frontline relief organizations with lifesaving resources to reach out to the homeless in extreme winter weather conditions.

The Toronto Police Service and 13 Division have been involved in this cause for over 11 years. Our community-minded sponsors along with officers from Traffic Services and Auxiliary Officers from Community Partnerships and Engagement Unit (CPEU) will be on hand to help distribute the survival kits and help to the homeless. Additionally, over 150 volunteers will assist with this 20th annual Project Winter Survival.

Project Winter Survival is an Engage and Change program committed to helping those who are less fortunate endure the hardships of winter by providing such necessities as sleeping bags, clothing, food, toiletries, gloves, socks and various first-aid items. Since its inception in 1999, Project Winter Survival has placed in excess of 30,000 survival kits into the hands of Toronto and surrounding area homeless persons.

Media will have the opportunity to captures volunteers packaging the kits for distribution.

Personal Injury Collision #4/2019, Holly Street at Soudan Avenue

On Friday, January 18, 2019, at 9:49 a.m., police responded to a call for a Personal Injury Collision which occurred on Holly Street at Soudan Avenue.

It is reported that:

- a 57-year-old man was driving a Land Rover southbound on Holly Street at Soudan Avenue and came to a stop at the stop sign

- an 89-year-old woman was walking across Holly Street from the east to the west side, on the north side of Soudan Avenue

- the vehicle proceeded and struck the pedestrian

- the pedestrian was transported to hospital with what appeared to be minor injuries. The hospital later advised that the injuries sustained were life-threatening

Police are asking local residents, businesses, and drivers, who may have security or dash-camera footage of the area or incident, to contact investigators.

Public Safety Alert, Stolen medication, Victoria Park Avenue and Danforth Avenue area

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of a quantity of stolen medication.

On Friday, January 18, 2019, at 11:25 a.m., two packages containing controlled drugs were stolen from a delivery vehicle in the Victoria Park Avenue and Danforth Avenue area.

The packages contained sleeping pills and insulin.

The medication could be harmful/fatal if ingested, especially to children.

Jean Oakley, 61, was last seen on Saturday, January 19, 2019, at approximately 4 p.m., in the Eglinton Avenue East and Mount Pleasant Road area.

She is described as approximately 5'7", 120 lbs., with brown eyes and long black dreadlocks. She was last seen wearing a grey coat and white and purple running shoes.

Police are concerned for her safety.

Sanjay Malik, 53, was last seen on Saturday, January 19, 2019, at 8:50 p.m., in The Queensway and Islington Avenue area.

He is described as 5'6", 200 lbs., with short black hair, brown eyes, clean shaven and he wears eyeglasses. He was last seen wearing an orange and grey winter jacket, grey sweatpants, a black t-shirt and black running shoes.

Police are concerned for his safety.

Nicholas Mackay Clackett, 25, was last seen on the Saturday, January, 19, 2019, in the area of Dovercourt Road and Queen Street West.

He is described as 6'2", 180 lbs., with a thin build, a blond mustache, and a shaved head. He was last seen wearing a black spandex jumpsuit, a floral shirt and a black leather jacket.

Police are concerned for his safety and well-being.

Elena Papushina, 79, was last seen on Sunday, January 20, 2019, at approximately 2 p.m., in the Marlee Avenue and Eglinton Avenue West area.

She is described as 5'3", approximately 154 lbs., with short grey hair. She was last seen wearing a blue toque, a quarter-length nylon ski jacket, light grey wool winter pants, black boots, grey knitted mittens and she was carrying a small orange and red purse.

Police are concerned for her safety.

Theft investigation, Bloor Street and Howland Avenue area, Woman identified, man wanted

The Toronto Police Service is requesting the public's assistance locating a man and a woman wanted in an investigation into a series of thefts, in the Bloor Street West and Bathurst Street area.

It is alleged that:

- on Saturday, January 5, 2019, a man and a woman entered a store in the Bloor Street West and Howland Avenue area

- they stole merchandise and left the store

It is further alleged that:

- on Monday, January 7, 2019, the same pair entered another store in the Bloor Street West and Bathurst Street area

- they stole merchandise before walking out of the store

Both incidents were reported to police. An investigation has revealed the identity of the woman.

Gina Daranyi, 25, of no fixed address, is wanted for:

1. Two counts of Theft
2. Two counts of Fail to Comply Probation


The man is yet to be identified. He remains outstanding.

Investigators believe the pair are working together, targeting members of the public and retail outlets. It is also believed they are responsible for a theft which occurred on Saturday, January 5, 2019, in the Bloor Street and Annex area.

Shooting Investigation, Kingston Road and Woodbine Avenue, Man arrested, John Okoro, 23

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of an arrest made in a shooting investigation.

On Sunday, January 6, 2019, at approximately 2:30 p.m., officers responded to a call for a shooting in the Kingston Road and Woodbine Avenue area.

On Friday, January 18, 2019, John Okoro, 23, of Toronto, was arrested in Barrie on an unrelated matter. He is facing the following charges in Toronto:

1. Attempt Murder
2. Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
3. Fail to Comply Probation
4. Possession of a Weapon
5. Conspiracy to Commit Murder
6. Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm in Motor Vehicle
7. Pointing a Firearm
8. Use of Firearm During a Commission of an Indictable Offence
9. Discharge Firearm with Intent to Wound Endanger Life

Personal Injury Collision #8/2019, Millwood Road and Malcolm Road

On Saturday, January 19, 2019, at 5:31 a.m., police responded to a call for a Personal Injury Collision that occurred on Millwood Road south of Malcolm Road

It is reported that:

- a 20-year-old man was driving a Ford on southbound Millwood Road, south of Malcom Road

- a 20-year-old man was in the front passenger seat of the car

- the vehicle lost control, mounted the east curb and struck a railway bridge support

- the driver sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital

- the passenger sustained serious injuries and was transported to hospital


Police are asking local residents, business, and drivers, who may have security or dash-camera footage of the area or incident, to contact investigators.

Bank Robbery Investigation, Broadview Avenue and Gerrard Street, Man arrested, Carlos Olivera, 48

The Toronto Police Service Hold-Up Squad would like to make the public aware of an arrest made in a bank robbery investigation.

It is alleged that:

-on Thursday, January 17, 2019, at approximately 6:10 p.m., a man entered a bank branch in Broadview Avenue and Gerrard Street area

- the man approached the customer service representative and made a verbal demand for money

- the man threatened to shoot the customer service representative if they did not comply

- the man vaulted the counter, reached into the cash box drawer and grabbed a quantity of cash and fled the bank

Officers from 55 Division were in the area and saw the man fleeing the bank and immediately placed him under arrest.

Carlos Olivera, 48, of no fixed address, has been charged with:

1. Robbery
2. Possession Property Obtained by Crime Over
3. Disguise with Intent

He was scheduled to appear in court at College Park, on Friday, January 18, 2018, in room 501.

Arrests made in Toronto & London Retail Robberies, Man and Woman Arrested

The Toronto Police Service Hold-Up Squad would like to make the public aware of arrests made for robberies linked to the Toronto and London area.

It is alleged that:

- on Monday, January 14, 2019, at 2:15 a.m., a man and woman drove a black Honda Civic with Nova Scotia license plates to a gas station in an area outside of London, Ontario

- the woman entered the store posing as a customer

- she purchased a coffee and returned to the vehicle

- the man, who was armed with a black handgun, entered the store wearing a ski-style mask and a hoody pulled over his head

- the man approached the store clerk and made a demand for money, which he received

- they both fled the area in a vehicle


It is further alleged that:

- on Monday, January 14, 2019, at 8:35 p.m., a masked man entered a gas station in the east end of Toronto

- the man was armed with a long black firearm

- the man made a demand for money to the store employee

- a struggle ensued between them and the mask was pulled off the man

- the man was recognized as being a previous employee

- the man then brandished a knife and cut the 42-year-old man in the neck and fled

- police arrived on scene and located the vehicle

- both the man and woman were arrested


An AR15 replica rifle was located inside the vehicle. The store employee received non-life-threatening injuries.


Lorne Eric Norton, 25, of no fixed address, was arrested. He was charged with:

1. Robbery with a Firearm
2. Two counts of Disguise with Intent
3. Uttering Threats
4. Robbery with a firearm
5. Aggravated assault

He was scheduled to appear in court at College Park Court, on Friday, January 18, 2019, in room 507.


Danielle Vickey MacNeil, 20, of no fixed address, was arrested. She was charged with:

1. Two counts of Robbery with a Firearm

She was scheduled to appear in court at College Park Court, on Tuesday, January 15, 2019, in room 501.

She is described 5'5", 155 lbs., with short dyed-blond hair that is shaved at the sides. She was last seen wearing a black/white scarf, a brown leather coat with white fur lapels, grey joggers and black boots. She was carrying a pink purse.
