Homicide #36/2018, Matthew Staikos, 37, Update, Investigators release security camera video and images and suspect description

On Monday, May 28, 2018, at 11:30 p.m., police responded to a call for a shooting in the Bay Street and Yorkville Avenue area.

Police arrived on scene and located a man with obvious signs of trauma. He was pronounced at the scene.

The victim has been identified as Matthew Staikos, 37, of Toronto.

On Friday, June 1, 2018, Homicide Detective Omar Khan updated the media on the investigation.

Investigators describe the shooting suspect as black, mid-20s-to-late-30s, slim-to-medium build, 5'10", wearing dark clothing.

The suspect vehicle is described as a silver/gray, newer-model, four-door Mercedes-Benz sedan.

It was reported that:

- Jammar Allison, 25, was last seen on Friday, June 1, 2018, at 10 p.m., in the Rexdale Boulevard and Highway 427 area

- he was last seen being escorted into a dark Caravan with tinted windows

He is described as 6’, thin build, last seen wearing pink shorts, black T-shirt.

On Sunday, June 3, 2018, at 6 p.m., in the media gallery at headquarters, Homicide Detective Sergeant Mike Carbone will update the media on the investigation into Homicide #33/2018.

Detective Sergeant Carbone will announce an arrest and charge.

The Toronto Police Service would like to advise the public of an arrest in the investigation into Homicide #33/2018.

On Saturday, May 26, 2018, at approximately 2:15 a.m., officers responded to a 9-1-1 call at a home in the O'Connor Drive and Pape Avenue area.

On Sunday, June 3, 2018, Yostin Murillo, 22, of no fixed address, was arrested. He has been charged with:

1) First-Degree Murder

He is scheduled to appear in court at 1000 Finch Avenue West on Monday, June 4, 2018, 10 a.m.

Police request assistance with shooting investigation, Allen Road and Highway 401 area

The Toronto Police Service is requesting assistance identifying the vehicle and the suspect involved in a shooting investigation.

On Friday, May 18, 2018, at 4:15 p.m., officers responded to a shooting in the Allen Road and Highway 401 area.

It is reported that:

- a black vehicle pulled up next to the victim

- approximately five shots were fired from within the vehicle, with two striking the victim

- he was rushed to hospital

There is no description of the suspect.

The suspect vehicle is described as possibly a 2013/2014 black Honda Civic sedan with tinted windows.

If the vehicle is located, do not approach. The operator is considered armed, violent and extremely dangerous. Call 9-1-1 immediately.

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of traffic restrictions and security enhancements for the week of Monday, June 4, 2018 to Sunday, June 10, 2018.

Tuesday, June 5, 2018, 8 p.m., Rogers Centre - Blue Jays vs. NYY
Wednesday, June 6, 2018, 7 p.m., Rogers Centre - Blue Jays vs. NYY
Thursday, June 7, 2018, 7 p.m., Rogers Centre - Blue Jays vs. Baltimore
Friday, June 8, 2018, 7 p.m., Rogers Centre - Blue Jays vs. Baltimore
Saturday, June 9, 2018, 1 p.m., Rogers Centre - Blue Jays vs. Baltimore
Sunday, June 10, 2018, 1 p.m., Rogers Centre - Blue Jays vs. Baltimore

With this in mind, the TPS is preparing to restrict access in and around the area of Bremner Street, from Spadina Avenue to York Street.

The area of the Rogers Centre will have controlled access with checkpoints managed by the Toronto Police Service. This is to ensure enhanced public safety while limiting the flow of vehicular traffic in the area.

For those using accessibility vehicles and other mobility-accessible services when attending the Air Canada Centre, Bay Street Gate 2 will be available.

For those attending the Rogers Centre, Rees Street, northbound, from Lake Shore Boulevard West will be used for accessibility vehicles and other mobility-accessible services. A staging area for those using accessibility services will be set up on Rees Street, at Bremner Boulevard, for gate 7 and off Blue Jays Way, in front of the Marriott Hotel, when entering through gate 13. Rees Street will also be available for those patrons parking at the Rogers Centre.

Police, in partnership with the Rogers Centre and Air Canada Centre, are encouraging people to use public transit or other carpool options.

The public may also notice other security measures in the surrounding area, including an increased police presence and/or the use of other public and private sector resources. While there is no imminent threat at this time, security issues are closely monitored and changes will be implemented as required.

Project Safe Streets, 32 Division Traffic Initiative, Initial enforcement results

Project Safe Streets is a 32 Division traffic initiative that started on Thursday, May 31, 2018, and continues through until Thursday, June 7, 2018.

The initial enforcement results are as a result of work from 32 Division officers in partnership with Traffic Services Motor Squad officers from Thursday, May 31 2018, to Sunday June 3, 2018. A total of 143 offence notices were served on drivers ranging from not wearing seat belts, document and equipment offences and the following more specific offences:

- Racing: 2
- Stunt Driving: 1
- Speeding: 34
- Failing to Stop for Red Light: 12
- Excessive Noise: 10
- Driving while using Hand Held Device: 9
- Unsafe Lane Changes: 3
- Fail to Yield to Pedestrian: 2
- Careless Driving
- Operate Motor Vehicle without Insurance: 2

Motorists, pedestrians and cyclists: please be alert and obey all traffic laws for your safety and others. The traffic initiative continues until Thursday, June 7, 2018.

On Friday, May 25, 2018, at 11:12 p.m., officers responded to a call for a stabbing at 550 Kingston Road.

Search warrants were executed by the Toronto Police Service on Monday, June 4, 2018.

Tiek Anthony Kydd, 21, of Toronto, was arrested and charged with:

1) First-Degree Murder

He appeared in court at College Park on Monday, June 4, 2018, room 501.


Noah Hurlock, 19, of Toronto, was arrested and charged with:

1) First-Degree Murder

He is scheduled to appear in court at College Park on Tuesday, June 5, 2018, 10 a.m., room 501.

Police seek assistance with shooting investigation, Weston Road and Sheppard Avenue West area

The Toronto Police Service is seeking the public's assistance with a shooting investigation.

It is reported that:

- on Thursday, May 31, 2018, at 10:55 p.m., officers responded to a shooting in the Weston Road and Sheppard Avenue West area.

- once on scene, officers located a man with life-threatening gunshot injuries

- he was rushed to hospital where he remains in life-threatening condition

Investigators are reviewing video from security cameras in the area

On Tuesday, June 5, 2018, at 11 a.m., at the Regent Park Community Centre, 402 Shuter Street, the Toronto Police Service, in partnership with the Aboriginal Consultative Committee, will be hosting the National Aboriginal Month Celebration.

Toronto Police Services Board Chair Andy Pringle and Chief Mark Saunders will be in attendance. The event will feature traditional drumming and singing from the Inuit Culture.

The event will be followed by light refreshments.

Public Safety Alert, Cryptocurrency Fraud

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of the following telephone Fraud scheme.

It is reported that:

- a business received telephone calls from people indicating that they are Toronto Hydro technicians

- they used "call-display spoofing" technology, which meant the phone number for Toronto Hydro was displayed on the complainant’s call display, even though it was not Toronto Hydro calling

- the business was advised that they were required to pay more for their hydro bill and a technician would turn off the power to the business within thirty minutes if payment was not made to the nearest cryptocurrency (Bitcoin) machine

- the business deposited money to a cryptocurrency machine

- the people then demanded more money

Cryptocurrency transactions are encrypted and cannot be reversed. No utility company will demand payment via cryptocurrency.

Man, 50, arrested in convenience mart Robbery, Danforth Avenue and Coxwell Avenue area, Faces five charges

Toronto Police Service Hold Up would like to make the public aware of an arrest and charges laid in an investigation into a retail Robbery at a convenience mart in the Danforth Avenue and Coxwell Avenue area.

It is alleged that:

- on Sunday, June 3, 2018, at 12:45 p.m., a man drove a silver Honda Civic to the area of the variety store

- the man donned a mask and sunglasses before entering the store

- the man approached a woman, working behind the counter with her mother

- the man produced a knife and made a demand for cash

- the man then made his way behind the counter, pushing past both women

- the man attempted to open the register, eventually smashing it on the floor

- the man then carried the register outside and fled in the vehicle

On Sunday, June 3, 2018, Terrence Allen, 50, of Toronto, was arrested. He is charged with:

1) Robbery with a Weapon
2) Possession of a Weapon
3) Disguise with Intent
4) Possession of Property obtained by Crime (under)
5) Fail to Comply Probation

He was scheduled to appear in court at College Park on Monday, June 4, 2018, room 501.

Gregory Landry, 34, was last seen on Thursday, May 31, 2018, at 4:30 p.m., in the King Street West and Dowling Avenue area.

He is described as white, 5’4", large build, matted shoulder-length brown hair. He was last seen wearing a grey-beige knee-length fall jacket, loose-fitting jeans.

Police are concerned for his safety. There is no picture currently available.
