Media advisory, Thursday, December 7, 2017, 9:30 p.m., Yonge Street, south of 401, MADD Toronto joins police for festive RIDE

$

MADD Toronto, Toronto Police Service, Ontario Provincial Police, CN Police Service and MPP Soo Wong join forces to promote the importance of safe and sober driving for a special RIDE event this holiday season.

Impaired driving is a deadly and persistent problem in Canada. On average, four Canadians are killed and 175 are injured in impairment-related crashes every day. These deaths and injuries are entirely preventable.

RIDE, or Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere , is a sobriety checkpoint program used by police throughout Ontario. Originally started in 1977 as Reduce Impaired Driving in Etobicoke, the program was soon expanded across the province as a way of removing impaired drivers from Ontario roads and deterring people from driving while impaired. The roadside spot checks are held year-round, with increased frequency during the holiday season and over long weekends.

"We are proud to have this opportunity to join the Toronto Police Service, the Ontario Provincial Police, CN Police Service and MPP Soo Wong during this holiday RIDE campaign," said Everilda Ratnakumar, President of MADD Toronto chapter. "This is an opportunity for us to support the police in their efforts to talk to motorists, give them some of our awareness materials, red ribbons and generally reinforce the message about safe and sober driving this holiday season.

MADD Canada's 30th annual Project Red Ribbon campaign runs from November 1, 2017 to January 2, 2018. With plenty of parties and celebrations taking place over the holiday season, and many people travelling to see family and friends, the risk of impaired driving his high. The red ribbon is a symbol of the wearer's commitment to sober driving and a tribute to the thousands of Canadians who are killed or injured in impairment-related crashes each year.

For more information, please see the Project Red Ribbon page on the MADD Canada web site at www.madd.ca.

The Toronto Police Service is committed to assisting people with accessibility needs in the community and fostering a safe and clear path for emergency services in highly congested shopping mall areas at all times, especially during the busy holiday season.

On Sunday, December 10, 2017, Parking Enforcement will be launching a heightened enforcement campaign called “Shop Smart, Park Properly.” The campaign will focus on the enforcement of accessible parking spaces, the misuse of accessible parking permits, the detection and retention of counterfeit accessible parking permits and the enforcement of critical safety zones around these mall areas such as fire routes and loading zones.

The campaign will start on Sunday, December 10, 2017, and will conclude on Sunday, December 17, 2017. Malls in the city, where significant problems have been identified for the misuse of accessible permits and obstructed fire routes/safety zones, will be included in the directed patrols.

The City of Toronto has increased fines significantly for parking in accessible parking spaces without a permit ($450) and fire routes ($250) to stress the importance of ensuring that these areas are kept clear for people with accessible parking permits and emergency service vehicles respectively.

Members of the media are welcome to participate in ride-alongs with members from Parking Enforcement. Requests can be sent to Brian Moniz, Operations Supervisor, Parking Enforcement West, at brian.moniz@torontopolice.on.ca.
