Push For Hope, TPS officer to push/pull weighted steel sled three kilometres, Raise funds to support inner-city youth

$

The Toronto media and public are invited to join 11 Division Unit Commander Superintendent Heinz Kuck in this inaugural "Push For Hope" event.

On Saturday, June 18, 2016, at 9:30 a.m., starting from 11 Division, 2054 Davenport Road, public parking, Superintendent Kuck will push-pull a weight-bearing steel sled a total of three kilometres.

The route:
- start at 11 Division, 2054 Davenport Road
- east on Davenport Road
- south on Dufferin Street
- east on Dupont Street
- south on Westmoreland Avenue
- ending at the Dovercourt Boys and Girls Club, 180 Westmoreland Avenue

During the "push-pull," every few hundred metres, he will stop, and youth from the club will speak briefly about the hardships youth face in Toronto, (homelessness, unemployment, illiteracy, crime, poverty). From that described societal "weight," weight plates will be added to the sled. This will occur three times, bringing the sled close to 300 lbs.

As the push continues, Dovercourt Boys and Girls Club staff will then describe what programs the club offers, helping youth achieve success in life. At these brief moments, weight is removed. The weight added becomes symbolic of the weight and obstacles in life, and the lessening of weight represents successful youth support programing.

The trek ends at 12 p.m., at 180 Westmoreland Avenue, where a cheque presentation will take place, as well as a celebratory community BBQ.

The purpose of the event is to raise funds to directly benefit the "Music Makers" program, giving youth a chance at music, expression and creativity.

The dedicated web site can be found at: www.pushforhope.myevent.com/.

*Media are invited to walk or drive the route with the team and capture the essence of the inner-city youth experience.

For more information, please contact Superintendent Heinz Kuck at 416-808-1114.
