Media advisory, Thursday, May 16, 2013, 10 a.m., Marine Unit, 259 Queen's Quay West, Kick-off to Safe Boating Awareness Week and Media Day

On Thursday, May 16, 2013, at 10 a.m., at 259 Queen's Quay West, the City of Toronto will officially proclaim May 18- 24, 2013, as Safe Boating Awareness Week

Following the proclamation, the Toronto Police Service Marine Unit and the Canadian Safe Boating Council will host a media day with numerous exciting events until 2 p.m. at the TPS Marine Unit, 259 Queen's Quay West. Leading up to the long weekend, the TPS Marine Unit, Canadian Safe Boating Council, MADD Canada, the Canadian Power & Sail Squadrons, Canadian Recreation Products, Harbourfront Canoe & Kayak and Harbourfront Powerboating and Sailing Centres will stage five unique interactive stations for media to experience the essentials of boating safety, such as:

1. Selecting & Fitting Children’s Lifejackets – Canadian Recreation Products
2. The dangers of Alcohol and Boating – MADD Canada
3. Be Prepared, the Importance of Boating Courses- Canadian Power & Sail Squadrons
4. Interactive demos with Kayak, Paddle Board, Sailboat, small Power Boat (Safety Equipment) - Harbourfront Canoe & Kayak and Harbourfront Powerboating and Sailing
5. Dangers of Cold Water Immersion - Toronto Police Service

The Canadian Coast Guard cutter Cape Storm will also be on-hand for touring and to discuss their experiences responding to calls from recreational boaters requiring assistance.

The Victoria Day long weekend is considered by many as the unofficial start of summer. The goal of this event and Safe Boating Awareness Week is to decrease the number of boating fatalities by educating the public as they begin their boating season with the knowledge and key boating safety tips to help ensure that every trip is a round trip.

On Thursday, May 16, 2013, at 10 a.m., at the Panorama Lounge, Union Station, 65 Front Street West, Kevin Flynn, Parliamentary Assistant to Ontario’s Minister of Transportation, will join representatives of the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police to kick off the 2013 Drive Safe! province-wide traffic safety campaign focusing on rail and road safety.

Chief Steve Tanner, President of the OACP, will join MPP Flynn along with Marc Laliberté, President and CEO of VIA Rail Canada, and Acting Superintendent Gord Jones, Toronto Police Service Traffic Services, representing the OACP Traffic Committee.

The Drive Safe! R.I.D.E. campaign will feature a new public-information booklet with information on rail and road safety as well as pedestrian safety, drinking and driving, traffic-collision reporting, protecting consumers from fraud when purchasing a vehicle, and Ontario's“"pullover" laws. All Ontario municipal police services and OPP detachments will work together to help promote traffic safety across Ontario.

On Thursday, May 16, 2013, at 1:30 p.m., in the lobby of police headquarters, 26 members of the Toronto Police Service will be recognized for bravery, humanitarianism, superior investigative work and overall outstanding police skills as they receive awards for 2012 Police Officers of the Month.

Additionally, the TPS Business Excellence Award will be presented to five serving members of the Service and one retired member, for innovation, community service, technical achievement, customer service and reliability.

The presentation will be hosted by Christopher Worth, Chair of the Police Officer of The Year awards. Click here for program.

Chief William Blair and Toronto Police Services Board Chair Alok Mukherjee will be in attendance for the presentations.

Jeffrey Armstrong, 28, was last seen on Thursday, May 16, 2013, at approximately 8:05 a.m., in the Queen Street West/Ossington Avenue area.

He is described as black, 5’10”, 180 lbs., short dreadlocks and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a white jacket, black pants, and white
shoes.

He is considered dangerous and should not be approached by members of the public. Please call 9-1-1.

Man faces 18 charges in firearm investigation, Photographs of seized firearms released

On Thursday, May 16, 2013, police executed a search warrant at a home in the Pape Avenue/O’Connor Drive area.

It is alleged that:

- police seized a Ruger SR9 semi-automatic 9mm handgun, a CM-11/nine mm (Mac 11) full automatic machine gun and a quantity of marijuana

It is further alleged that:

- between October 2012 and May 2013, the accused criminally harassed a man.

On Thursday, May 16, 2013, James Park, 26, of Toronto, was arrested and charged with:

1) Point Firearm
2) Forcible confinement
3) Extortion
4) two counts of Threaten Death
5) Possession for the Purpose Marijuana
6) Criminal Harassment
7) two counts of Careless storage of a firearm
8) two counts of Possess firearm knowing the serial number has been altered, defaced or removed
9) three counts of Unauthorized possession of a prohibited device
10) Careless Storage Ammunition
11) two counts of Unauthorized possession of a firearm
12) Possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition

He was scheduled to appear in court at Old City Hall, on Thursday, May 16, 2013, room 101, at 10 a.m.

George Munroe, 51, was last seen on Friday, March 29, 2013, at 11 a.m., in the Hamilton area.

He is described as black, 6'2", 170 lbs., medium build, goatee, long dreadlocks and wears glasses. He was last seen wearing a black/white baseball hat, beige long-sleeve cotton shirt and black shoes.

Walk for Values, Sunday, May 19, 2013, 11:30 a.m., Rolling road closures

On Sunday, May 19, 2013, the 11th annual Walk For Values walk-a-thon is taking place at Nathan Phillips Square. The event will begin at Nathan Phillips Square at 11:30 a.m. It will wind its way through the city, returning to Nathan Phillips Square at 1:30 p.m.

A rolling road closure will take place in association with the walk-a-thon. Street curb lanes along the route will be closed in the direction of the walk-a-thon, ie: eastbound curb lane only as the parade moves eastbound along Gerrard Street East. All other lanes will be allowed to flow.

Rolling Road Closure Route: 11:30 a.m., – 1:30 p.m.

Formation area: Nathan Phillips Square
Queen Street West - westbound curb lane & lay-by only
Bay Street To University Avenue
University Avenue - northbound curb lane only
Queen Street West to Gerrard Street West
Gerrard Street West - eastbound curb lane only
University Avenue to Yonge Street
Yonge Street - southbound curb lane only

The event will proceed regardless of weather conditions.

Victoria Day Ashbridge's Bay fireworks, Monday, May 20, 2013, 10 p.m., Traffic congestion and safety advice

The Victoria Day Ashbridge's Bay fireworks will take place on Monday, May 20, 2013, at 10 p.m. The fireworks display will last approximately 15 minutes, and can be seen on the Boardwalk from Coxwell Avenue to Victoria Park Avenue.

Major traffic delays can be expected and there is limited parking in the area.

In past years, heavy congestion has resulted in the closing of Lake Shore Boulevard East, between Coxwell Avenue/Woodbine Avenue.

Public transit is recommended as the TTC will be providing additional bus service to accommodate crowds.

Setting off personal fireworks in a public park is dangerous and unlawful. Fireworks brought into the area by attendees can be seized by police. Police will be patrolling and enforcing city by-laws, including the Liquor Licence Act.

Members of Delano Coombs' family will be at the conference and available to speak to the media.

Police request assistance with robbery investigation

The Toronto Police Service is requesting the public's assistance identifying suspects wanted in a robbery investigation.

It is reported that:

- on Tuesday, May 14, 2013, at 11:30 p.m., a 66-year-old man was returning from a casino bus trip when he was dropped off in the Broadview Avenue/Gerrard Street East area

- while the man was walking in the area of Gerrard Street east and Jones Avenue, he was approached by an unknown number of suspects and hit on the back of the head

- he was robbed of cash and identification

He was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

On Wednesday, May 8, 2013 members of 55 Division Major Crime Unit executed a search warrant at a home on Newbold Avenue.

It is alleged that:

- officers recovered over 160 items of property believed to be stolen from vehicles

- another 40 items of stolen property were seized from a second-hand store

The items included identification, electronics and clothing.

Noah Tyrrell-Malcolm, 32, of Toronto, was arrested and charged with:

1. Theft Under
2. Use Credit Card Obtained by Crime
3. Use Credit Card Obtained by Crime
4. two counts of Fail to Comply with Probation
5. 16 counts of Possession Property obtained by Crime (under)
6. Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking in Stolen Goods Under

He was scheduled to appear in court at College Park on Friday, May 17, 2013, room 505.

Homicide #18/2012, Delano Coombs, 27, Update, Photograph of a suspect's clothing and suspect description released

On Thursday, May 10, 2012, just before 3 p.m., police responded to several reports of a shooting at 4020 Dundas Street West.

Officers responded and located a 27-year-old man, on the ground in the laneway of 4020 Dundas Street West, suffering from obvious gunshot wounds. He was rushed to hospital via emergency run, however succumbed to his injuries at hospital a short time later.

Investigators allege that Delano Coombs was lured to 4020 Dundas Street West by people who most likely knew him.

It is further alleged that:

- Delano Coombs was ambushed while in his vehicle and then shot to death

- there were multiple suspects involved and multiple firearms used in this homicide

- police have located a sweatshirt worn by one of the suspects with an "STG Entertainment" logo on it

- DNA has been collected, however, there is no DNA for this offender in the national databank at this time

A suspect description has been released:

- male, black, approximately 20, 5'10", with a slim build. In May 2012, this male was wearing his hair in a braided style.

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of a quantity of lost medication.

On Thursday, May 16, 2013, a quantity of Oxycontin pills were lost in either the Jane Street/Shoreham Drive or Rutherford Road/Hwy 50 area.

These drugs could be harmful/fatal if ingested, especially to children.

Anyone finding the medication is asked not to handle it, but to contact police
