Man charged in stunt driving investigation, Islington Avenue/Lakeshore Boulevard West

$

On Thursday, April 25, 2013, at 1:28 p.m., police saw a vehicle on Islington Avenue, at Lakeshore Boulevard West.

It is alleged that:

- the officer saw a 2005 Mercedes-Benz SUV driving at a high rate of speed,

- a speed−measuring device, used by the officer, registered a speed of 102 km/h in a 50 km/h zone

A 23-year-old man, of Toronto, has been charged with:

1) Stunt Driving − Drive at rate of speed − 50 km/h or more over speed limit
2) Speeding 102 km/h in a 50 km/h zone
3) Careless driving
4) Turn not in safety
5) Racing – driving at rate of speed – marked departure

His licence has been suspended for seven days for stunt driving, the vehicle he was driving has been impounded for seven days.

In this case, the vehicle was not owned by the driver. As a result the owner of this vehicle has lost the use of the vehicle for seven days and is responsible for the impoundment charges of approximately $800.

Any person who lends their vehicle out must realize that, as the registered owner, they are responsible for any monetary charges levied against the vehicle. This includes charges for the vehicle impoundment due to a stunt driving charge, a Criminal Code prohibition, or a provincial driver licence suspension.

On September 30, 2007, Bill 203 came into effect. This important piece of legislation addresses the issues of speed/stunt driving on Ontario roads, to ensure the safety of all road users, and remove those who put innocent people at risk with bad driving behavior.

Speed and alcohol are two major contributing factors in fatal collisions. Make the right decision, don’t drink and drive. You decide your speed, physics decides whether you live or die. Do your part to keep our roadways safe.
