Two arrested in money-laundering investigation, Balasubramaniam Shanjeefkaran, 35, and Sukanya Panchalingam, 30, charged, Police concerned there may be other victims

The Toronto Police Service would like to inform the public of two arrests in an ongoing money-laundering investigation.

On Tuesday, June 28, 2016, officers started an investigation into a fraudulent cheque received at a money-service business.

It is alleged that:

- a woman tried to cash a certified cheque

- the cheque was determined to be fraudulent

- through investigation it was determined that a large number of fraudulent cheques had been issued using similar account information

- the fraudulent cheques had been cashed at a variety of financial institutions.

On Friday, February 10, 2017, Balasubramaniam Shanjeefkaran, 35, of Ajax, was arrested. He is charged with:

1) Fraud Over $5000
2) Possession of Proceeds Obtained by Crime Over $5000
3) Laundering Proceeds Obtained by Crime
4) Unauthorized Possession of Counterfeit Mark
5) Conspiracy to Commit Indictable Offence

He appeared in court at Old City Hall on Saturday, February 11, 2017, 9 a.m., room 111.

On Saturday, February 11, 2017, investigators executed a Criminal Code search warrant on his residence.

It is further alleged that:

- a large quantity of counterfeit documents and credit cards was seized.

As a result of the Criminal Code warrant and seizure, Sukanya Panchalingam, 30, of Ajax, was arrested on Monday, February 13, 2017. She is charged with:

1) Fraud Over $5000
2) Possession of Proceeds Obtained by Crime Over $5000
3) Laundering Proceeds Obtained by Crime

She is scheduled to appear in court at 1911 Eglinton Avenue East on Thursday, April 6, 2017, 2 p.m., room 407.

She worked for a financial institution as a fraud-detection agent.

It is further alleged that:

- investigators have determined that over $8 million worth of fraudulent cheques, stolen merchandise and proceeds of crime, have been obtained.

Police are concerned there may be other victims.
