On Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at 4 p.m., at the TPS Marine Unit, 259 Queen's Quay West, students in the 2013 TPS S.A.I.L. program will be mentored by Canadian Olympic sailing competitors, Greg Douglas and Brenda Bowskill, both Toronto residents who are currently training on Lake Ontario. The students and Olympians will hit the water in sailboats with instruction provided by Broad Reach Foundation for Youth Leaders. The media is invited to join the tour and watch as the kids sail away!
S.A.I.L., Self Awareness In Life, is a program geared to enhance youth development in leadership, teamwork, confidence/self-esteem and communication and has been created by members of 31 Division, the Marine Unit and community partners Broad Reach Foundation, Toronto District School Board, HMCS York and the National Yacht Club.
The participants, selected high school students, have been meeting every Wednesday since May 8, 2013, between 3 p.m., and 7 p.m., until Wednesday, July 31, 2013, when a graduation ceremony will be held.
At the end of the program, the students will have been provided the opportunity to learn and demonstrate the skills required to operate a sailboat, build on teamwork, and qualify for their Pleasure Craft Operator's Card. With the support of ProAction Cops & Kids, they will be provided with t-shirts and transportation to and from the program each day.
For further information about this program or about the media day on Wednesday, July 10, 2013, please contact Detective Darrin Little at 647-408-1369.
Media will have the opportunity to be out on the water as the students sail.
