On Thursday, June 2, 2016, Toronto Police Service Financial Crimes executed several search warrants, and arrested two men, in connection with an ongoing investigation into taxi-cab debit-card fraud.
It is alleged that;
- this investigation began in the fall of 2015
- the investigation focused on taxi customers having their debit cards "switched" after having paid their taxi fare
- the taxi driver would switch the customer's card for one that resembled their financial institution
- the customer's card was then used to withdraw funds and to purchase retail merchandise
Muhammad Tariq, 26, of Toronto, was arrested and charged with:
1) three counts of Fraud Under
2) three counts of Possess Credit Card Obtained by Crime
3) Forgery
Ahmed Dogar, 25, of Toronto, was arrested and charged with:
1) Theft of Credit Card
2) six counts of Possess Credit Card Obtained by Crime
3) five counts Fraud Under
4) Fraud Over
5) three counts of Forgery
Both men are scheduled to appear in court at 1000 Finch Avenue West, on Tuesday, July 5, 2016, 1 p.m., room 301.
Police remind people to be vigilant when using debit cards at “Point of Sale” machines. Always maintain possession of your card and ensure you request a receipt.
Police are concerned there may be other victims.
