On Tuesday, June 4, 2013, police officers from the Toronto Police College and 22 Division, along with students from Second Street Junior Middle School, will be targeting speeders along Birmingham Street, east of Islington Avenue, during the 9a.m.- to-11 a.m. rush hour.
Traffic and pedestrian safety is a priority of the Toronto Police Service, and as such, the TPS has partnered with the Toronto Board of Education, students and residents in the community in this initiative. The purpose of the program is to bring greater awareness to drivers that excessive speed in a school zone has an effect on the school community. In addition, it will empower the participating students by giving them the opportunity take ownership of their community and change the driving habits of motorists in their schools area.
The offending drivers' speed will be measured by a radar unit operated by officers and the speed will be compared with the students' own mathematical measurements.
The offending drivers will be pulled over and given the option of receiving an offence notice from the officer or a safety message from the students of Second Street Junior Middle School.
For more information, please contact Sergeant Bernie MacDonald, Toronto Police College, at 416-808-4847.
