On Sunday, May 26, 2013, at 12:15 a.m., police saw a vehicle on the eastbound Gardiner Expressway, east of Highway 427.
It is alleged that:
- the officer saw a 2013 Audi S5 driving at a high rate of speed
- a speed-measuring device, used by the officer, registered a speed of 157 km/h in a 100 km/h zone
A 27-year-old man, of Brampton, has been charged with:
1) Racing- driving at rate of speed- marked departure
2) Racing- changing lanes at rate of speed marked departure
His licence has been suspended for seven days for stunt driving. The vehicle he was driving has been impounded for seven days.
In this case, the vehicle was not owned by the driver. As a result, the owner of this vehicle has lost the use of the vehicle for seven days and is responsible for the impoundment charges of approximately $800.
Any person who lends their vehicle out must realize that, as the registered owner, they are responsible for any monetary charges levied against the vehicle. This includes charges for the vehicle impoundment due to a stunt-driving charge, a Criminal Code prohibition, or a provincial driver licence suspension.
On September 30, 2007, Bill 203 came into effect. This important piece of legislation addresses the issues of speed/stunt driving on Ontario roads, to ensure the safety of all road-users, and remove those who put innocent people at risk with bad driving behavior.
