The Police Officer of the Year Award is an annual tribute dinner held by the Toronto Region Board of Trade.

The Board created the award in 1967. Its purpose is to recognize members of the Toronto Police Service who have made significant contributions to making Toronto one of the safest cities in the world. Each month, an officer is selected for Police Officer of the Month, based on the following criteria: bravery, humanitarianism, superior investigative work and outstanding police skills.

Three years ago, the TPS Business Excellence Award was created. Its purpose is to recognize members of the Toronto Police Service who have made significant contributions to the Toronto Police Service and the City of Toronto. Each submission is judged on the following criteria: innovation, community service, technical achievement and customer service and reliability.

This year's Police Officer of the Year event will be held at the Toronto Region Board of Trade, 1 First Canadian Place, on Wednesday, June 5, 2013, at 6 p.m.

Police Officers of the Month for February 2012: Constables Scott Jackson, Alison Louie, Joshua Sarasua. Edin Aeljkovic and Mark Zettler, 23 Division

On February 9, 2012, several calls were made to 9-1-1 for the sound of gunshots, only yards away from an elementary school.

Both uniform and plainclothes officers responded to the call and saw four men running from the area. The officers broadcast the suspects information over the radio, which lead to one of the men being arrested immediately.

Constable Joshua Sarasua pursued a second man. While running, the man was displaying characteristics of an armed person. Constable Sarasua was able to effect a gunpoint-arrest and took the man into custody without further incident. While this arrest was taking place, Constable Edin Zeljkovic took a man into custody who had received a gunshot wound to his leg, prior to police arriving. She immediately rendered first aid to the man and requested an ambulance be dispatched to her location.

Constables Mark Zettler, Scott Jackson and Alison Louie spotted a third man matching the description that was broadcast. As they pursued him, he is alleged to have tossed a loaded firearm into a backyard while he ran from the officers. He was arrested a short time later.

Further investigation led to the seizure of two loaded handguns.

In recognition of their bravery and dedication to duty, these officers have been selected as Police Officers of the Month for February 2012.
