The winner of the 2014 Toronto Police Service Business Excellence Award was announced during the annual gala reception held last evening at the Toronto Region Board of Trade.

This award was created by the Board of Trade in 2009. Its purpose is to recognize the members’ contributions to the Police Service and the City of Toronto, based on innovation, community service, technical achievement and customer service and reliability.

This year’s winner is: The Paid Duty Review Project, Manager Lermy Ramos and Director Sandra Califaretti.

In spring 2011, the Police Services Board approved a recommendation made by the Auditor General of Toronto to review the procedures and systems used to manage and administer the Service’s Paid Duty System.

Manager Lermy Ramos set up a project team and conducted an in-depth review of the existing system. Interviews and surveys were conducted within the Service and visits were made to other police services in an attempt to determine best practices. The review and analysis led to recommendations which formed the basis of an automated distribution system. This system replaced the manual distribution of paid duties and manpower was re-deployed to frontline duties, saving over $2 million.

Test cases and controls were rolled out during the implementation phase and suggestions were incorporated. Every member of the team performed their roles under the new system knowing that the system change would lead to enhanced officer and customer engagement.

Congratulations to Manager Lermy Ramos and Director Sandra Califaretti.
