The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of a fraud investigation.
It is reported that:
- a man was contacted by an unknown person who identified himself as his grandson and claimed to have been in an accident in Montreal
- the caller said he had been arrested and was in a courthouse and required money to pay for bail in order to be released from custody
- the man sent funds through Western Union
- the man was contacted by someone claiming to be his grandson’s lawyer in Montreal and who obtained the confirmation number for the Western Union money transfer
- the man’s grandson was located and was not in Montreal, had not been arrested and had not required any funds.
Members of the public are advised to exercise caution and to speak with other family members before transferring funds to a family member who is reported to be in distress.
