On Thursday, February 5, 2015, between 4 p.m., and 6 p.m., uniformed police officers from 42 Division, the Toronto Police Transit Unit, Auxiliary Officers, along with community volunteers, will be riding TTC buses in Scarborough, distributing crime prevention material to passengers relating to street robberies in the area.

This educational and public awareness campaign is in response to several recent robberies that have taken place in 42 Division where victims were robbed of their purses, cellular phones or other electronic devices shortly after exiting a TTC bus.

These crime prevention pamphlets will provide TTC passengers with useful information and steps on how to lessen their chances of becoming a victim of a robbery. This information will include:

- how to properly use, hide and protect one’s electronic device,
- how to safeguard your purse and other valuables,
- where to walk at various times of day to avoid being in a susceptible area,
- general passenger safety tips

Officers will provide information on how and when to contact the police, the Crime Stoppers program and Toronto Police social media initiatives such as Twitter and Facebook.

By distributing this crime prevention material, it is hoped that a more informed, aware and educated public is will less likely become a victim of a crime in the first place.

If you would like to receive a copy of this material, it is available, along with many other crime prevention tips on 42 Division’s Facebook page under 42 Division Toronto Police Service.

42 Division’s Crime Prevention Officer, Constable Gary Gomez can also be reached by phone at 416-808-4220 or by e-mail at gary.gomez@torontopolice.on.ca.

For further information, please contact Staff Sergeant Dave Rydzik #1566 of 42 Division’s Community Response Unit at 416-808-4254 or by email at david.rydzik@torontopolice.on.ca.
