On Saturday, January 24, 2015, the Sex Crimes Human Trafficking Enforcement Team started an investigation into a Human Trafficking occurrence.
It is alleged that:
- a girl, 17, was forced into the sex trade industry
- she was beaten, choked and threatened
- she was taken to hotels throughout the GTA where she was forced to work as a sex trade worker over a period of approximately two months
- she was forced to hand over a quantity of money to a man
On Monday, January 26, 2015, Henok Mebratu, 22, of Toronto, surrendered to police. He was arrested and charged with the following offences:
1) Trafficking in Persons Under 18 years by Exercising Control
2) Material Benefit from Sexual Services Provided by Person Under 18
3) Material Benefit Resulting from Trafficking Persons
4) Telecommunication with Person Under 18 for Criminal Purpose
5) two counts of Assault
6) Overcome Resistance by Attempting to Choke
7) Uttering Threats
8) Trafficking in Persons: Transport
9) Forcible Confinement
He appeared in court at 1000 Finch Avenue West on Monday, January 26, 2015.
Police believe there may be more victims.
