On Saturday, January 17, 2015, at noon, Toronto Police Service - 13 Division, supported by Auxiliary Officers, Youth in Policing Initiative (YIPI) Students and over 150 citizens and corporate volunteers, will join forces at The Bargains Group, 890 Caledonia Road, during the 16th annual "Project Winter Survival" to pack 3,000 winter survival kits for the homeless across the GTA and surrounding areas. This is an Engage and Change initiative committed to helping those less fortunate.
Immediately following the pack, the kits will be picked up and distributed to those in need through more than 150 homeless shelters and outreach programs.
Since its inception in 1999, Project Winter Survival has packed and distributed over 23,000 winter survival kits through social service agencies, homeless shelters and outreach providers. The kits provide such necessities as sleeping bags, blankets, winter hats, toiletries, bottled water, healthy snacks, etc. The project relies solely on corporate and community donations to meet the growing demands of relief agencies and shelters across the GTA.
13 Division has participated in Project Winter Survival over the past five years, strengthening their community outreach. "The growing demand for the kits far exceeds the number of survival kits that we can fund," said Jody Steinhauer, Project Winter Survival founder. "Project Winter Survival has become a lifeline for those agencies who front-line poverty and homelessness. These kits have become a vital tool to help outreach-providers approach those living on the streets, to hopefully get them inside, eventually get them into transitional housing and end the cycle of poverty."
