Media advisory, Thursday January 8, 2015 noon, Toronto Police College, 70 Birmingham Street, Toronto Police Service welcomes 88 new recruits

The Toronto Police Service is pleased to be hosting a graduation ceremony for 88 new police recruits on Thursday, January 8, 2015, at the Toronto Police College, 70 Birmingham Street, starting at noon.

In attendance for this special occasion will be the Honourable Yasir Naqvi, Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services; Mayor John Tory, Toronto Police Services Board Chair Alok Mukherjee, and Chief William Blair.

The graduating class is representative of Toronto’s diverse cultural community and brings a superior level of varied knowledge and abilities to the Service, including language skills, previous military or policing experience and post-secondary education.

The class is comprised of 20.5% women and 39.8% visible minority members. A total of 81.8% successfully completed post-secondary education. Of those, three recruits have doctorate degrees and four have Master's degrees. A total of 20.5% have previous military or policing experience. A total of 54.5% of the class speak a language other than English, including: Arabic, American Sign Language, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Cantonese, Dari, Farsi, French, German, Greek, Gujarati, Hindi, Italian, Konkani, Korean, Kutchi, Macedonian, Mandarin, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Pushtu, Russian, Serbo-Croatian, Sinhalese, Slovakian, Somalian, Spanish, Tamil, Twi, and Urdu. Of the new recruits that speak a second language, 26% speak two or more languages other than English.
